flexes ?????
If I grab the Givi rack and move it forward and back, it flexes maybe a sixteenth of an inch. There is no play left to right. Does this sound normal? It's not just the rack that flexes, but the whole rear section, plastic and all.

Mine is solid.

I just took it apart and here's what I found (frame extension mount):

- 1 missing short bolt
- 1 loose short bolt
- 1 long bolt with missing nut (found it in toolket compartment)
- 1 loose long bolt

Good thing I checked! It's off to the hardware store tomorrow to get a bolt.

And I'd regularly inspect all 4 bolts holding the subframe to the backbones for proper torque, as their known to come loose over years and years of (too heavy) topcase-rattle...
A torque wrench and a drop of thread-lock deals with the issue
I tried to find these but wasn't sure exactly sure where to look. I didn't see it in the manual either. Any hints?

Martin :

I doubt if I'm carrying more than 22 lbs. But when I have time, I will re-enforce the bracket on both sides. Why take a chance ??

Just a note - The Hondaline trunk for the ST1100 moves 'around' on the rack. The first time I installed one I thought I'd made an installation mistake. Sort of like the saddlebag 'flop' - built into the design.
First ride after I installed mine, I noticed a rattle and found it coming from the top box that was bouncing around a bit on the bracket. So I used a 1" wide strip of sticky backed insulation foam stuck around the perimeter of the bracket. The box still has a little give relative to the bracket but no longer rattles.

Is this linky what you're looking for?

I think this may be closer. I believe ST1100Y is referring to to where the subframe bolts to the frame.I'm not sure those bolts are accessible with what I have removed. I might wait and check them next time I have the rest of the plastic off.

Jim,
you're a role model there ;-)
I've seen STs loaded so hefty, that their rested on the rear tire once the owner finally managed to hulk the rig onto the main-stand...

I believe ST1100Y is referring to to where the subframe bolts to the frame.
You believe correct...
The two forward ones (bold inserted from the outside, nut attached inboard) can be accessed from the "tool-compartement" once the seat is removed.
To get to the rear ones (only bolts, each attaching into a threaded sleeve, welded into the frame tube) one must remove the tailcone (thus carrier plate and passenger handles must come off too)

I got the missing bolt, torqued everything and used some Loctite. It's much more solid now.

Just what bolts are you guys referring to? As far as I know, the tailpiece that the rear assembly/racks bolts to, is a welded part of the frame;
The "subframe" is up front beneath the engine.

Got ya !...Seems to be a problem with the wording. You guys are simply referring to how the PLATE, CENTER GRAB RAIL mounts to the tail of the frame via 4 bolts? No subframe involved.

And now enter this as thread title and see how it goes... ;-)
(I once tried an -MT3- part number reference as title... uh-oh... )

I was a bit confused. There is a subframe (FRAME, SUB part number 50150-MT3-000) which is on the bottom of the main frame. The part in question is "PLATE, CENTER GRAB RAIL" (part number 77313-MT3-000) which is the one that cracks and the bolts tend to get loose on.
