My F I light came on under speed, and stayed on yesterday on way to see son on I-40. Pulled in to get gas, then it was gone. Got back up to about 80 mph and it came back on. Stopped at sons, now it is off. It is not blinking any codes using the process as described by Jeff B. above. I am guessing a plugged hose, vacuum leak, or a bad fuel tank filled gasket? My 2003 ST 1300A with 102k miles on it runs great.

Check clogged 5 way tee (and nipples that the vacuum lines attach to)
With your year/mileage I would strongly suggest checking the fuel filter and fuel pump as well.
If you, or anyone else has used an aftermarket fuel pump, I'd check the rubber hoses as well (use OEM ones, not those provided with aftermarket pumps)
Even though you "hear" the pump wind up when you turn the key on, does not mean that it is holding pressure etc.
It could be bleeding pressure off and not moving fuel etc.
This will usually raise its head up when the bike gets hot or under heavy load.
Check your codes for any Historical codes stored.
Lastly I would check the ECU.
