This may not be the most appropriate place to start this thread but here goes. Its getting cold in central pa. 31F when i left the house this morning and for the most part it was a nice 30 mile commute to work. My finger tips did get cold and i think if I sheild them from the wind I could manage the ride better. Eventually i will go with heated grips but will need to do the alternator upgrade and dont have the time right now. Has anyone put handle bar grip shields on there ST1100 or have a recomendation on what would work?

Back in the 1970's a classmate used dry cell battery powered gloves and vest. If something similar is still available, you can delay the alternator upgrade at the smaller expense of Energizers or rechargeable batteries.

I am pretty sure Gerbing or whatever they are called now has them you can probably find some at a sporting goods or ski shop as well.

joe rocket makes heated gloves that have a built in battery pack. battery will last 2hrs. on high and 4hrs on low, before you need a recharge.

For short rides (less than two hours,) I've been using a pair of battery powered gloves that I bought at Cabela's. (They're made by Gerbing.) They're good for about two hours on high, so you'd only need to recharge them each night. A tip: turn them on while you're putting on your other gear; it's easier to hold temperature than to reach temperature while you're traveling in sub-freezing weather.

VStrom handguards work great for cold, rain, all year on an 1100.

For many years I just figured that living in SoCal exempted me from needing heated gloves or heated vest/liner. About 2006 or 7, I bought a set of heated gloves. I liked them so much, I bought a heated liner.

Now, from about mid November through mid April, I have them on and do my 125 mile commute, comfortably.

A pair of Nitrile gloves under your riding gloves is a quick and easy way to hold the heat in your hands, cheap with no mods to you bike, I did this alot when riding ATVS in the winter time. If you blow into them when taking them off they go back on easy. [h=1][/h]

Oxford heated grips and Barkbusters blizzard hand guards. The BBs are spendy but I think they are worth it. I ride with light weight gloves into the 40s and don't have any waterproof gloves and my hands stay warm and dry. I do wear insulated gloves when temps get down lower.
