Just bought an 03 with a set of aftermarket risers already installed. I want to buy a different cover with a ram mount on it but i'm not 100% sure what they are. After some searching i think they are 1st gen Helibars but some confirmation would be appreciated.

Not sure if 1st or 2nd generation. Best bet it to take off the right side handlebar. Will be a model number stamped there.

They look like the gen 1 Heli bars that came on my second ST..They could be gen 2 but they are Heli bars.

what?
there's a standard ram kit with a conical expanding rubber plug that fits in that hole in the steering stem... not as pretty as a beauty cover but wicked effective. i have my heavy old garmin brick of a street pilot gps on one of these mounts and it is great

Thanks for the help! Now I just have to see if helibar sells just the cover plate.
Not that I'm aware of. Why do you need a new cover plate? You can polish it up or paint it, you know?

I want to mount my phone down there so I want the cover with the premounted ram ball. I sent an email to helibar but they no longer carry plates for the gen 2s. I am going to see if the mcl plate is compatible, if not I will have to figure out a way to drill it myself.

Just drill and tap it, it's not that hard. Really!

And if you mess up the threads tapping it, no big deal. Just put a nut and washer on the inside.

A few years ago, I purchased a MCL cover plate for a Helibar Gen 2 riser; it fit perfectly. That's not surprising because it appears that MCL simply copies whatever Tour Performance produces.

I have the exact same riser on my 2004 (from previous owner) with the exception that it is tapped for a mount, which I don't have (yet). Not sure if it was drilled/tapped by the prior owner or if it came that way but it was nicely done.

I have the same on my 2004 and have seen others. I used to wonder the same but now know the two threaded holes are stock, but what was meant to use them in wish I knew?

Would it be the two holes that are used to mount the 'cap' or bridge that holds the optional RAM ball and/or 12V or powerless port?

One comes with the risers either blank or with one or the two mentioned options.

We are talking about the same tapped holes, but it doesn't look like the port is at the same place and the ball only may use one hole, so I don't know.

In case anyone else is thinking about the drill and tap thing for a ram ball - the Ram B ball comes in two sizes:

- RAM-B-236, a 1 inch ball with a 3/8-16 stud, and
- RAM-B-237, a 1 inch ball with a 1/4-20 stud.

The early covers were drilled and tapped 1/4-20, but there were reports of the ball stud bending from using a long arm with lots of leverage to mount your GPS. MCL changed to the 3/8-16 version to eliminate that issue.
