UK bikes can ride lights off, lights on position lights or headlights on.
Although it's pretty rare to see any bike without dipped beams illuminated in the daylight.
Newer bikes tend to have headlights permanently on, although no legal requirement. Not yet anyway.

So you can operate the headlight independently of the position lights?
Yep, OFF-P-ON switch on RHS pod
Do they come on when you turn your key to ACC?
Depending on region/model version, as well as year...
Till '95 the AR version (Austria) of the ST1100 had an additional "P" on the ignition lock (mandatory due to local regs), energizing the 5W front and both 5W tail-light bulbs with ign OFF and steering locked.
This bears the risk of leaving the parking lights on unintentionally, resulting in a dead battery in the morning as 3 times 5W put quite a drain on it...
Got superseded from '96 on (EC over-regulates...), thus my '94 features it, the '00 not, leaving me with the task to always check for the second "klick!" when turning the ignition off on the '94 ;-)
I intend to eliminate this risk when replacing the entire lock-set...

Thanks for the info! My CL77 had a 'parking light' click but none of my other bikes (all Honda 'cept the Duc) had it.
