I use the 170/60 ST1300 rears all the time with no problems (instead of the 160/70 stock). If you have a 96 or later ABSII, the fronts are actually the same size as the ST1300s front - 120. I have heard of folks running the 120 width on the 110 front rim, but I've never tried it. I do know that an ABSII front rim will work on a standard front with the 120 tire and no clearance problems (I do that on my 97 standard).

I'm curious to learn the front rim size for the 96 or later 1100. On my 1990 I have an 18 x 3.00 inch rim; is the later rim wider?

The standard front rim for non-ABS bikes 96 and up is still 3.0 (110). Only the ABSII models had 43MM forks and the 120 rims. However, you can run an ABSII 120 rim on a standard and use the 120 tire without any clearance problems. You just have to swap out the discs from the standard wheel to the ABSII wheel (bolt pattern is the same). I'm running Pirelli Angel GTs (ST1300 size) on my 97 ABSII one right now, and an ABSII 120 front rim and tire on my 97 standard.
