Mirror housing straps

Hi, I took off my left and right mirror housings having found the safety straps weren't attached to the fairing panel. I own a 1997 ST1100 UK model and I cannot see where the plug end of the strap goes. There has been a similar posting showing a slot, but my panels do not have this. Any ideas? Maybe I just have to drill a new hole? Thanks, Dave Norfolk UK

I had a '98 and no holes for the corresponding retaining plug/connection. Either reusable or single use zip ties. To anything available inside the covered area. Or deeper to the frame inside.

Or just fuggedaboudit. Took those off both of my 1100's soon after obtaining them and never lost a mirror cover - yet (20 years). If the circlips are all in good shape, it isn't going to wiggle itself off and if the bike goes down the mirror cover won't roll away, if tethered, but it will still be toast.

Uncle Phil beat me to it.

Enroute to the firST NESTOC at Albany, NY, I hit something at speed on I-94 in MI and pranged the front rim and rear shock. And both mirror cover/signal modules were saved by those straps. Ya never know.... FWIW YMMV

Same as John for me when I had an St1100. I hit a bad bump at speed and the right side mirror broke loose but because of the strap it stayed with the bike and was not damaged. I just stopped, popped it back on and continued. I`d say keep them hooked up.

Wrong, hit a small bird on the interstate knocked it off but still hung there .... no damage

Phil,

That's it, problem solved. Thanks for the photo, it all makes sense now. Best wishes from the UK. Dave

The strap is also useful when your bike is parked and some careless person bumps/snags the mirror housing as they walk by. DAMHIK.
