--- THU – “Setting Up - Camping Out!” - This is arrival day and I have no long distance ride planned, just a short RTE for those that arrive early.
--- FRI – “Breakfast at the Broken Arrow Cafe” in Uriah at 0730 - A LAZY DAY riding through the back country roads of LA with plenty of picturesque homes and buildings and a couple of spots where you are in a leafy tunnel that looks like something out of a travelogue. This will include a lunch stop at WHATABURGER in Brewton, Al. This route is set. RIDE – 205 miles, TIME 4:00 + 2:00 meals and pit stops.
*** For those that want to explore some of the "tourist" areas in LA/NWF (Lower Alabama/Northwest Florida) there is the NAVAL AVIATION MUSEUM in Pensacola, Florida ( http://www.navalaviationmuseum.org/ ) about an hour and a half southeast. Then there is the BATTLESHIP PARK on the Mobile Bay Causeway ( http://www.ussalabama.com/ ) about an hour south.
--- SAT – “Breakfast at the STAGECOACH” – Rolling out about 0730 we begin our ride through some leisurely country roads in Lower Alabama entering I-65 South at Exit 37 for a quick run to Exit 34 and then another 5 miles up AL 59 to the Stagecoach Cafe for breakfast. After the meal and conversation we continue north on AL 59 for a 2 hour jaunt to Millers Ferry. The first 48 miles over AL 59 and CR 1 is to Perdue Hill for a fuel stop. After that it is a 10 mile sprint through more back roads to AL 41 and there will begin a whole new riding experience for some. RIDE AT YOUR OWN PACE ... RIDE AT YOUR OWN PACE ... RIDE AT YOUR OWN PACE. For you mountain riders it will seem like a little bit of home hiding out in south Alabama, but for you flat land and desert riders you will probably be praying for it to end ... Happily ... and SOON! The first 20 miles (mm 56 - mm 76) can be a challenging mix of ups and downs, twists and turns, blind curves and hills that for a novice, might seem like a mini Dragon at 60 mph. There are speed limit signs at the entrances to the severe twisties ... PLEASE - HEED THEM! We continue north to the Millers Ferry Marina for a brief pit stop and water break, then turning back southeast for about an hours ride through downtown Camden SHARP LEFT & RIGHT - PAY HEED and down 265 through Beatrice and Monroeville and ending at a GREAT BBQ restaurant, called MARK’S in Excel, just just 5 miles south of Monroeville, AL. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/820041 , WE MUST GET to MARK’S not later than 1300 as they close at 1400. Then either RTB or continue south to the Atmore, AL “Williams Station Day” Fall festival!, The route is set. RIDE – 215 miles, TIME 4:30 + 3:00 meal and pit stops.
--- SUN – “Breakfast on the RUN” – OPTIONAL – For those that want to enjoy another breakfast there is the “food court” just south of I-65 - the Muskogee Inn, Hardees, McDonalds, the Waffle House, plus the Wind Creek Casino “all you can eat” breakfast buffet. Hope you enjoyed yourselves ... Y’all come back now hear!
>>>> I was informed by several people at The Last Ride of The Year that Little River State Park was closing permanently on December 30, 2016. I have been in contact with someone in charge of the park and received this message "Good morning Dan. It is going to re open. It is just taking time getting another company in there to run the park." - Hope to see you in October!
Conversation with those now in charge of Little River State Park regarding the re-opening.
