My 1993 ST1100 is in pieces at my local Honda dealer and I am 0-2 with salvage 28amp alternators. I need help! I'm not in a position to do the 40amp upgrade, so I am hoping there is a good Samaritan on here that can help me connect with a *good* 28amp unit with some life still left in it.

Thank you in advance for your help,

Matthew

It's been a while, are you still in need of an overhauled 28A stator?

I'm not sure about the OP, but I may be. Just got stranded yesterday after running with a new battery, believing my 6-month old one had given up the ghoST. Apparently not, but I haven't had a chance to do the basic diagnostics but worst case my alternator has gone bad? If that turns out to be the case, then I may be in need of one.

okay, fortunately to preform the needed tests at the P2 and P3 connector are as simple as removing the seat and left side panel.

I might have a good one sitting in the garage. I will check later in the day & PM you.....
I picked it up to have on the ready of my 91 gave out. With the 91 history it's just taking up space.

Ok. The stator can be tested off the bike as well. No continuity between p2 and p3 connector. Continuity between p2 leads and p3 leads separately. Ohms between p2 leads 1 to 4. Ohms between p3 leads <1. Double check my numbers for ohms, I didn't research them, pulled from memory.

Tested mine today and no joy. With the engine running @1500 RPM, I don't get consistent AC voltage between the p3 yellow pairs. Ignition off, continuity in one pair of yellow leads but not the other two. p2 resistance checks out. It seems like I am in need of a replacement.

A NEW 40A on just showed up on ebay since earlier in the week. Any reason why I shouldn't jump on that?

Yes there is a reason you should not jump on that. For the price, it's 20.00 less than a new one I found with a part search on Google http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Honda/Motorcycle/1996/ST1100+A/ALTERNATOR+96-98/parts.html
AND, it's important to know that going from a 28A model ST to the upgrade requires a few more parts. Base plate, longer bolts etc. There are several comprehensive lists and hundreds of upgrades to this alternator including a tool kit that has been mailed around. This isn't to deter you from this. It's to not simply state, "Sure get the alternator.." It's not the only thing you'll need. mod

Sorry, jumped the gun, the alternator I found on ebay was a used one for 400.00. I wouldn't be surprised if the new one wasn't close to that price though. I think 400 for a used 40A is ridiculous. I have seen them in working condition on eBay for 180.00. Right after I had mine rebuilt for 300.00, awesome.
