Hello, I'm currently riding across the US... a southern route. I started in Boston on Saturday. I'm in Atlanta today and leaving tomorrow for Dallas. Any favorite routes? I'm not going slow, but I don't want to stare at the odometer the whole time. I like the look of the old route 80, which keeps going to San Diego, my eventual destination. Anyone done this? Thanks for your time!

82 West out of Tuscaloosa might be a good route if you're not pressed for time. I've ridden much of it through Texas and Arkansas.

+1 on US82, just drove that one across northern Texas last week. Construction west of New Boston is completed, very smooth tarmac. However, US84 west is another option. Scenic ride across Louisiana & east Texas with some excellent food options along the way (Sandbar Restaurant under the bridge crossing the Miss! or anything on Main in Logansport) . Also, this route is the traditional east-west route of the Texas emigration of the 1820s-30s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_San_Antonio_Road

I hope you see this in time. Unless you want or need to be in Dallas do yourself a favor and avoid going through Dallas/Ft. Worth. Construction is everywhere and the traffic can be miserable. It WILL be miserable during rush hour just about everywhere.

US 90 is a good route across Texas. You will still have to navigate through or around Houston and San Antonio but otherwise it is a great road with speed limit of 70 to 75 mph west of Houston.
