Part of me wants to try something like this soooo bad. The smarter part of me knows I'd end up as a smear mark on wall after about 6 hours (probably less).

At 130mph, he's only figuring 6-700 miles on a set of tires???
And 27000 on the bike, he doesn't want to push it??? At 27k, it should be just getting into it's stride!

I think Kendo's run from NYC to San Francisco last fall was more of a challenge than this seems.

Not to brag (too much) but I did 1160 miles last september in under 15 hours, mostly on I40 running with the traffic, piece of cake. Averaged 77 mph.

Interesting. I wonder if he'll use up tires that fast given tire technology has improved since the prior attempts. It would seem 400 miles every 4 hours would put him easily over 2200 miles counting stops assuming he can hold his average predicted speed through the turns. I know several guys that have done over 2000 miles in 24 hours on one set of tires.

On a Track .... ?

Back in my college days a friend of mine and I ran 53 laps around the track in 80 minutes for "fun" (half a marathon). borrrrrring.

It would be more fun to find a 200 mile loop on the Autobahn where he could run at 130+ mph for the duration....

I too have done a 1000 mile run in 15 hours straight through more than once. On the St1300 I was not even tired.
My brother on a HD ultra was still vibrating hours after he got off the bike.

I didn't know anything about Carl's LA-NY run prior to my NY-SF ride last year. Turns out I rode 100 miles further in an hours less time. I had less fuel on board and was required to get a receipt every 350 miles. I was never more than 10 over unless I had a rabbit. No radar detector or lead car scouting. I remember glancing down at 4am (24hrs in) and I had eclipsed 1800 miles. My stops were real quick, gas and go every 330-340 miles. Pee break every other fuel stop (helmet never left my head in 38.5hrs-LOL). 2000+ miles in 24hrs on interstates would be real tough without losing your license. 2000+ miles on a closed course doesn't seem as tough as it does boring.

Personally, I put Ken's LD trip in a whole 'nother (better) category than this circular trip. IMO, Ken's was much, much tougher considering he was riding in the wild, with all it's variables. This is nothing more than a laboratory bench test, albeit a tough one. The hard part to me is there's no tangible goal like an end point (city), just a number to hit for the loops around the track, with no waypoints to guide you. Will still follow it just for the intrigue. BTW Ken, congrats again on that run, way impressive!

I'm all for accomplishments.
For me, riding is all about the sensory experience. LD riding on a track would be agony, as would be riding to a 'driven' schedule.
I can certainly appreciate the effort and the record. Just not for me.

I know there are ultra marathons in which the runner does exactly the same - runs for 24 hours to set the maximum distance a person can run. Does anyone know of a similar race for cars (24 Hours of Le Mans mandates driver changes to minimize exhaustion)?

+1! I liked the San Fran to NYC record better!

Riding on the track is a more controlled and safer (and more boring) way to grab another record.

Like that bike!

Hmm.... it took me 36 1/2 hours to cover that distance... both times*... on real roads... getting off the ST1100 at each gas stop.. AND a 3 hour nap. :)

Was that from LA or SF? I had heard someone rode the SF-NY route in 36+ hrs. I guess the LA-NY 50cc ride isn't too popular (maybe it doesn't meet the IBA's "the hard way" mileage criteria?)

Anyone know what this track is like that he is attempting the record on? I have to assume it's an oval and not some kind of road course.
