Re: NEW 2012 gas milage

And Dave's the man. Time on his hands and lots of experience.

Dave, when we were talking mileage, I was a little surprised you were getting 45ish, I think you said. I'm consistently more around 40, but maybe that's just the way I ride. I do sometimes smell gas, but I'm never sure if it's me. We'll talk!

No gas smell, no gas on floor
3 bars always after warm up, no variance
Pipes yellowing just as my 07 ST did

I have had a long debate with the corp. rep; tried to go over his head and was told "mgmt does not accept calls from customers".

Always run down to X miles to go before empty. Usually put 6.5 to 6.7 in to fill and reset trip odo. Have been checking MPG every fill up since I first bought my 97 1100 on to my 07 1300 & now the 2012. Every tank I calc MPG.

Mission Viejo. What is your experience with MPG? Have you had the bike since 2012?

let's talk, I will be on this thing for at least 10 years and I can't have fun until it's fixed. Too bad Honda won't step up and fix it.

Re: NEW 2012 gas milage

What I'd do first is find another ST1300 buddy, fill up at the same time, go for a ride for say a few hours and then check it again and see how much fuel each of you burnt up.
I'm finding I don't get the same mileage as I used to as I'm a bit more aggressive with more experience on the 1300.

It's a new bike and you have a break in period where the components have to bed in, how much warranty did you get with the bike.

Sounds like my kind of guy. This is my lifetime fuel usage chart after roughly 598 fuel ups.

Curt Gran and I spent the better part of one year trying to figure out why his 2007 always got 3-4 MPGs less than my 2004 while driving on trips together. He used to always gripe about how that 2007 was significantly worse than his previous 2004. We had swapped ECU's a few months before his crash so as of today I am still using his original 2007 ECU. BTW, we never did figure out what was wrong although one of the last things that we hadn't tried yet was the oxygen sensors.

I hope I didn't discourage you. I would think that with the poor economy that you are getting that it would be easier to figure out what is wrong. Good luck...

Did you guys swap bikes?

Back in the days when I went on long trips I always got better mileage than other people who were riding the same bike on the same trip. I think it has something to do with throttle control, but was never able to explain it any more than that. There's probably some production variation in the bikes themselves that could account for some MPG differences as well. None of that would explain the poor MPG of the OP though.

Re: NEW 2012 gas milage

Same for me and a former riding partner. Both of us would fill up our ST1100's together on long rides, and he was always commenting that there must be something about my bike as to why it was always getting 5-10 mpg better than his.... while I kept pointing out that he was always running 1 or 2 gears lower than me, and always whacking the throttle to full open then full closed. His reply was always along the lines of "nah, that can't be it...we rode exactly the same distance." :doh1:

But back to the OP ... even if using the throttle heavily and lower gears, this doesn't explain such low mpg. There's something not right, and lots of good ideas listed above.
