I've noticed that one of the expanding push pins has finally disappeared from my ST while out and about.

Windshield Push Pin.jpg

This pin looks secure but it's just 'sitting' there waiting to eject. It's mirror is gone. Pushing the plastic until it depresses significantly still won't let the pins engage. They pop right back and look fine as in the pic.

This bike has never had the plastic removed (owned since new) but I'm wondering if the pins for these two points are longer than others or is something else amiss?

Out of curiosity, I went and checked my pins. Yikes! Mine, too, were both loose.

So, here are a couple of pictures of the pin you're missing, one with the pin in the open position, the other in the closed position.

I found that sometimes you have to push up from underneath so the colored plastic is pushed flush with the black so the pins engage properly.

Yes! Them are those! lol When I look into the hole it looks like they're too short to reach another mounting hole. I was installing a RIBS mount and had to remove four of those. Two where snug as bugs but the other two just couldn't be made to grab. All four where the same length as in your pics.

I never could get the OEM rivets to fit well in THAT one position by the windshield.
Ended up pulling the center part out and putting in a large black coated philips screw. At some point I may have replaced it with an after market larger size as well.

I gave up trying to use those rivets years ago. I put a "floating nut" and then use a screw to hold them in place.

Old Thread Alert

Once upon a time I asked about some push pins:

Somewhere in another thread here Igofar (Larry) posted about a source for a pin nearly identical except 7mm long instead of 5mm. I think the 7mm pin would fit near the windshield where the 5mm pin supplied by Honda does not secure properly for many of us.

Does anybody know the source he listed? I've been searching but no joy. I was lucky to find this one!

California Sport Touring used to stock some of those pins. Not sure of sizing though.

Plastic retention pins don't just wear during remove and replace. Vibration and stresses from wind and road take their toll as well. Keep a hand full of new ones. I check all I can reach periodically for security. When any are questionable, they get tossed.

I used some of the screw type fasteners on my bike. I'm pretty sure I found them at Lowes or Home depot. They work very well.IMG_1436.JPG

I know that it is the same source. You were asking what Larry's recommendation was and wrote that you could not find his post where he had listed the source. In post 11 above you wrote that you thought that you had found his source but did not mention finding his original post. I was just linking you to Larry's original post to let you know that you had indeed found what he had recommended in case you were not sure and were still trying to find his post.
