Lol, maybe I should provide closure.
Preloading did help.
About 1 year ago, 2 years after the original post, I had some more serious issues where after the bike was hot the clutch would slip. After flailing a bit with various cheap fixes, I replaced the clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder, along with the line between them and associated banjo bolts and washers. Naturally all new fluid, expensive DOT 4 high temp stuff. This fixed any functional issues.
I also found that using Rotella 15w-40 made a difference in smoothness of engagement.
All of these things together made a huge difference. While 1-2 and 2-1 are still the roughest gears, overall she's actually a pretty amazing shifter now.
