Speedo off 5mph compared to GPS

I've found that speeds under 50mph, the bike's speedo shows approximately 3 mph higher than actual. Speeds at 65mph or higher are always indicating 5-6 mph higher than actual. Kinda annoying. Any fixes for this?

Yes, there is a fix, But....... All Honda motorcycles and most all bikes are about 5 mph off. And to adjust the mph you are also adjusting the odometer and trip odometer, no choice. So one or the other will be off. Sucks.
If you'd rather have your odometer read high there are these adjusters on eBay.
Not what you wanted to read, me neither. Good luck bud.

Best to consider it a built in margin for error as you approach an unseen speed trap.

Not all of them. I've owned several Honda motorcycles with virtually no speedometer error and one is in the garage right now but history does show the ST1300 speedometer to show about 7% error and 2% error in the odometer. I'm almost always riding with a GPS mounted so I use it for speed readings.

I'm lost now without my GPS for speed. And an FYI, my cheap KLR650 is dead on on speed. Go figure.

I was considering a speedo-healer as well,, until I mounted my old garmin gps. It is an older model that no longer has current map support, however,, all the statistical functions,,, speedo,, odo,, moving average,, overall average and peak speeds are very valuable for distance riding. And you can find them for sale, by owners who have upgraded,, for $15 or $20 bucks. When I paired that up with a cheap and simple 7" magellan,,, I have all the features I need. The old garmin can even play music and photo's if desired. I see there are now gps speedo,, in either hud or regular formats available on ebay now as well. Lots of options,,, Cat'20170511_185925.jpg

Fix the speedo you break the odometer.
What is more your preference?
:plus1: When and if you sell your bike, you would have to sign the "mileage unknown box" on the title (at least in California).
I have heard of at least one person that got jammed up by DMV due to the mileage because they thought the healer was an attempt to alter his odometer.

Use your GPS or just subtract 5% and you'll be close enough.

FWIW, my 1st '01 ST1100 (non-ABS) was about 5-7% high. With the exact same tires, my current '01 ST1100 (ABSII) is pretty much dead on up to ~60 mph and then within 1 mph on up to 100 or so. No idea on why the difference.

Or you can do it MY WAY!

LAX-Miles-s.jpg

Let me introduce "The Cop Speedometer"! It is good for up to 50+/-1mph 80+/-2mph.

Of course you have to throw your current speedometer/Mileage in the parts bin.

I have Cop Speedometers on two of my bikes and find them close enough. As for the other two bikes. I have my GPS mounted on my tankbag, I can read the speed from that. Oh, and the two bikes that have the cop speedometers, they came wrecked, without speedometers.

I installed that unit on my 1300 a year ago, and my buddy's 1300 a couple weeks ago. We're both very happy with it. Now when either of us lead, we're going the actual speed indicated. It was annoying (and dangerous) last year when he would lead, thinking he was going the speed limit, only to get a big build up of vehicles behind us trying to pass. He couldn't quite get it though his head that he was about 5 MPH slow at 65.
