Today Andy and I leave for a little run across the country. We head for Ocean City, MD where Route 50 starts and then we will ride it to Sacramento, CA and then on to the Golden Gate Bridge (I hope the fog is not there this time). We'll do Pikes Peak on the way out, then Bodie, CA (ghost town) and the Extraterrestrial Highway (Area 51) on the way back. I've ridden Route 50 from Sacramento to Dodge City and various other parts of it, but I've wanted to do the whole thing for a long time. Route 50 is like the old Route 66, except 50 still exists in total. We'll be taking as much of the very 'original' road as there is and run up to Thistle (a town completely destroyed by a flood caused by a landslide) and back down on what is now Highway 6 where Route 50 used to run (they routed Route 50 with I70 from Grand Junction to about Salina when I70 was built) now. It's mostly two lane and goes through Washington DC, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Kansas City, Lake Tahoe, Austin, NV (Loneliest Highway In America), and Ely, NV. So if you see a Red ST1100 with a flag on the back and a Ducati Scrambler in hot pursuit, that would be us! :D

Got a timetable for your transit through DC and out towards Middleburg? I might be able to arrange a meetup for a coffee and pie break, or at least a wave and salute as you pass.

I presume you're aware of what an armpit 50 is, from DC out as far as South Riding / Chantilly VA. 6 to 8 lanes of heavy suburban sprawl development, heavy traffic, and loads of stoplights. West of there it gets much more pleasant, and includes some of my favorite local-to-me miles.

That route is a bit out of my back yard, so I can't give you a high-five on the way.

That said, I'd rather be out there than here at work, so post some pictures for us and have a great time! :bannana

One nice stop, and a prudent Gas Stop is Ely Nevada. The Hotel/Casino is nice, vintage décor, moderately priced, and has a great restaurant. It is rider friendly. The hotel marks off the front of the hotel on main street (the highway) for bike parking. I stopped there on my eastbound trip back from Reno last summer. I met a bunch of other bikers and had a great dinner with new friends.

Have a great trip and enjoy the scenery. That's one of those trips that's about the experience and not the miles per day.

Uncle Phil, when you reach the bay area, if you or your bikes need anything please contact me, as I would be happy to help you with any service needs or roadside repairs.

I could however, make you a deputy :rofl1:
