Many years ago "I rebuilt" an auto starter motor. Pulled it apart, had a shop turn the armature, I replaced the brushes and bushings, and reassembled it. Not a big deal. But then, doing what I did hardly constitutes rebuilding. I would assume doing that to a modern starter is no different.

There are tons of them on fleaBay from $15.00. I'm not sure I'd mess around with rebuilding one.

Most of the time, those ultra-cheap "rebuilt" units are just returned core units that are cleaned up enough to look and "work", for a while. A buddy of mine rebuilds starters and alternators for a living. He has dissected a lot of such units and very often the old bearings, brushes, etc are reused and armatures turned only if they have to be.
The warranty return rate of big box part store units are over 30%.
I like to be able to take an OEM unit over to him and have what needs to be refurbished done properly.
