I also have a welder, it's only 110 bucks from Harbor Freight but the only thing I've ever had to do to it in 6 years is buy more wire to keep welding with it.
The 6 bucks was for the ubolts.

4 x 1 1/8 wide by 3 inch ubolt.
Approx 7/8 square tubing, had on hand.
Approx 7/8 by 1/4 aluminium flatbar, had on hand.
2 x 1/4 x 3/4 bolt with nut for hinge point.
2 x 1/4 or 5/16 bolt for the footpeg stopper, welded to the side of the square tubing.

Looks good... so far. I can think of a few ways to improve it cosmetically. For example, drill holes through the square tubing so the the u-bolt is parallel with the tubing rather than diagonal. And, of course, eventually everything needs to be painted black.

Would live to see final pictures.

I made a couple of changes a couple of modifications. The u-bolts are placed through holes drilled in the square tubing. I have a long-distance trip coming up to test them out. After that it's likely weld squares on the end of the tubing to close them off then paint.

Hi there. You went to the darkside, I see. How’s your experience with that? What tire do you recommend? I did it on my 2010 Burgman with no issues at all. I used a Bridgestone Potenza

It has worked well on the Darkside. I have 63k on my bike and 60 of it was on a car tire. It's a Bridgestone and has worked well, I got a hole in my first one, a Turanza at 31500. So not too bad for more tread remaining. I am fast approaching the 30k mark on my 2nd tire.
