    Jul'17 MOTM - ReSTored

    Please congratulate
    Philip
    for being the

July 2017 Member Of The Month.

    From Philip:

Well, I received a PM from Mellow a few days ago informing me I am MOTM for July. Iím not certain what I did to deserve this recognition as there are so many outstanding members of the ST-Owners group out there. Probably should just take my momís advice and say thank you.

My first ride was on a friendís Honda 50 minibike around 1970 when I was about 13 years old. Didnít end well as I pegged the throttle, wasnít quite certain where the brakes were, froze and then rode over a 3 foot embankment wiping out in a heap. I was hooked!

I had a variety of bikes until summer 1983 and sold my 1977 Yamaha XS7502D to buy a car. At that point I had been married almost 2 years and it seemed that it poured every weekend during riding season so, unfortunately, finances and priorities being what they were, the bike had to go.

Flash forward to 2002 and I definitely had the itch to get back in the saddle, but I had really no idea what type of bike I wanted. The í77 Yamaha 750 was a triple with shaft drive, mag wheels, three disks and I had put a colour matched Windjammer III fairing on it, so that seemed to be a good starting point in terms of specs. Cruised a number of web pages and saw the ST1100 on the Honda site, but I had never seen one on the road and really knew nothing about it.

Couple of months pass and itís late fall 2002 when I read about the ST1300 to be released in North America as a 2003 model. So off to the local Honda dealer I go and they have a non ABS 1300 on the floor. I climbed on board and just sat on it for a few minutes taking in all the details. Couldnít believe how bikes had evolved and how different the ST was compared to my í77 Yamaha, I was blown away. I ordered the ABS model on the spot, to be picked up end of March 2003.

Unfortunately, the Canada 1300ís were held up due some QA and recall issues and by early June Iíd grown tired of calling the dealer and Honda to see when my bike would be available. So, cancelled the order, got my deposit back and purchased the 2002 ST1100 from another dealer a day later. Following Monday the dealer calls me to say my 1300 was just delivered to them in a crate and did I still want it..............

Somewhat frustrating missing out on the 1300, but Iíve really no regrets at all in keeping the 1100 all this time. I ride it nowhere near its capabilities, itís dead reliable, at about 105,000km itís just nicely broken in. I still pause to look and appreciate it every time I pass it in the garage, it has a classic appeal to me that lasts to this day.

Anyways, bikes aside, Vicki and I have been married for 36 years this August 1; we have 2 great daughters along with their partners, one grandchild now and another due Christmas 2017. Iíve been retired almost 2 years and have been so busy with family and long delayed renos that I wonder how I had the time to work.

It would be hard to quantify the value and the pleasure of being an ST-Owners member and kudos to Joe for running this site so effectively. Joe likely has stats somewhere about how many hours a member is logged in and Iíd probably be amazed (or embarrassed) to see the hundreds or thousands of hours Iíve spent on the site since joining in 2005.

Iíve done many dozens of member organized RTEís and STOC events over the years and weíre fortunate to have so many people actively involved in supporting the ST-Owners community. Iíve met and rode with a lot of great people.

Iíve also benefitted from the enormous amount of expertise on the site in terms of ST maintenance and continue to be amazed at the time and effort people put into their tech posts. I am always confident there will be someone out there who will respond quickly and help problem solve.

I hope to have a lot more time to ride now that Iím retired so maybe Iíll see you on the road sometime soon.

Nice write-up, was a good read. We have similar tastes... wine red ST1100 and the old Honda Trail 70!

    Congrats Phillip!

Too much white... I'm working on it!
