Clutch Rumble/Vibration

Hi, I have owned my 2003 ST1300 for about 2 years now and it has covered 46,000 miles.

The bike still runs faultlessly however, with the engine started but bike stationary and in Neutral I am aware of a Rumble noise from the clutch area and also a slight vibration felt through the handlebars BUT if I simply pull in the clutch , the noise and vibration immediately disappear for as long as the lever is held in.

I am fully aware of how the clutch works and the basic components involved but wondered if this is normal or whether there is a support bearing or something else that may need attention or is this normal?

The clutch works properly offering plenty of bite and also at the correct point and still retains a nice light action.

Any ideas as to what this might be please.

Thanks Darryl

That is a great question and I look forward to the good answers on here. Any thoughts that it could be the counter balancing shafts in some way?

That is completely normal. Explanations are split between between clutch basket rattle and transmission mainshaft rotation in neutral.

It's a noisy clutch basket. Not unusual for this bike.

If it wasn't doing it before (or not as loudly), your counterbalancers may have drifted out of adjustment.

Yup - I've found that my Honda bikes seem to have noisy clutches and notchy gear boxes. It's odd, because Honda cars are known for very quiet, smooth and easy shifting powertrains

+1 sounds normal. FWIW the clutch needle bearings were smooth feeling, and looking, at 97K. Clutch friction material wasn't near replacing, although the springs were at their limit. (Note mostly highway commute mileage)

By the time you get to 150,000 miles you listen closely to make sure it still makes the noise!
