Has anyone had success with the cheap OEM style Chinese knock-offs? My OEM VRR lasted 22year, ElectroSport 13 mos. so I thought I'd give one of these cheap ones fro Hong Kong a try.

In general, you get the longevity you pay for. And Electrosport leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I’ve seen a bunch of their stuff fail quickly. 22 years from OEM? I know what I’d be buying.

I have used one for a while but then my Alternator went south, not because of the regulator. The bike has since been updated with a 40amp unit by the new owner

Thanks for the comments. The El Cheapo is winging it's way from Hong Kong. I just think 200+ smackers for an OEM is a bit much. With the math though that would only be $9.52 a year. So I may be buying one (OEM) soon after all.

Sig material that right there!

Sometimes saving a buck or two isn't cost effective. OTOH I've never had venison.

My Ebay cheapo VRR is now in residence in my '94 ST1100 and working well as indicated by 14.7 VDC at fast idle.

That seems a bit high, I get 14.2 max, about 13.8 when the fan is running.
Might cause premature Battery or VRR failure. What were the voltages before the problem.

Voltages before with the ElectroSport VRR were going progressively lower probably around 13.6, much lower 12.7 or so with fan running before it failed completely. It is my understanding the 28 Amp. tend to run a bit higher than the 40s with the internal VRR. It seems the white wire which controls the field coil is what failed on the original OEM VRR and one leg of the rectifier going open on the ElectroSport one. The Chinese one does regulate and max's at 15.0 which is within parameters of the repair manuals. It's been my experience; although on different bikes overcharging doesn't occur until the voltage achieves 15.5+. Ill keep an eye on it and check for flaring headlight telltale. I keep the bike constantly on a battery maintainer so that may explain it running higher, perhaps it'll drop a bit on a longer ride with the fan running in NJ B to B traffic.
