new owner with rear drive question

Hi 2010 st1300 30,000m
Replaced gear oil today and I noticed that I can move the rear wheel 1 or 2 inches up and back weather in gear or in neutral. There is a clunk when done. Is this normal?? This is my first shaft drive Bike other than an old BMW.

Yup, there's a little play in there.

I concur that amount play is normal depending on how you measured it.

If you get a 'clunk' from the rear of the bike when shifting (NOT from the transmission) then you might have excessive gear lash. Well, I had said noise when I let out the clutch. This was not the transmission noise we are all familiar with upon shifting up or down.
