I got bored today so grabbed some road find diamond plate and made a shelf to put my camera on. Cost me less than $10 for hardware. Looks like crap but for cheap and 30 minutes of my time it'll do for proof of concept. Utilized existing screw holes so no lasting modifications to the bike.

Nicely done!

The only problem with "proof of concept" fabs is that they often become permanent, at least in my case-especially if they work well! Oh well, form SHOULD follow function!

Nice DIY. Mark Reis pioneered the idea years ago. One of my favorite farkles over many years and miles. Google “Mark Reis ST1100 dash shelf†and view the images. FWIW

Thanks for the replies, suggestions and links. I have already spent some time drafting some measured plans for the next version using some of the info.

Very nice! If you painted it matte or wrinkle black it would look like factory equipment!

Nice job!

The only suggestion I’d have, aside from the paint, would be to put a soft edge on it to prevent barked knuckles. One way to do that is to slit a length of small dia. hose (Tygon or neoprene) and fit the slit over the edge. You can glue it with something like cyanoacrylate or Gorilla Glue.

Various auto-supply places might have edging that's applied to car doors to help prevent dinging and paint-scratching. They have adhesive inside and when warmed can be cut / shaped / applied fairly easily.

As I think about it wrinkle paint (even black) can be fairly reflective. The texture appeals to me so maybe flat wrinkly black if there is such a thing or a light coat of matte black over the wrinkly paint.

I painted my dash shelf with bedliner paint. No reflection, pretty tough.
