Here in china, a brand new ST1300(abs) cost 218000RMB=32500$, and 2780$ for purchase tax, total:more than 35280$.
How much your ST cost?

the import tax is 30%
value added tax is 17%
sale tax is 10%
purchase tax is 10%

If factory price is $100
Import tax 30
Sale tax 14.44
Value added tax 24.56
Purchase tax 14.44
Total $183.44

the made in japan motorcycle will 2.0-2.5 times of factory price.

In the U.S. the list price was around $18,500. Honda offered dealer incentives (subsidies) so they could be had for around $11,500 if you got a good deal on a leftover model.

Sales tax varies by state, and ranges from 0% to 6 or 7%.

They have not been imported to the U.S. since 2012.

In the UK they're selling for around 12000 pounds. Is that around 16000 dollars? But no one's buying as far as I am aware.

Lot's of wrecked bike was shiped to china illegally. and was repaired in china. it still cost about 8000-10000USD
this kind of bike has no license, will be confiscated if you are catch by police.
as the Chinese get richer and richer, the number of this kind of bike is decreasing.
10000USD vs about 40000USD, what's your choice??

That proves how much you must love it. And you are right.
yes, ST is a very good bike, except the weight.
about 10 years ago, my friend has a illegal ST(see #9), the V4 engine and shaft drive deeply attracted me.
now, my dream came true, I buy a legal ST, it need great determination because all motorcycle can only use 13 years in china legally.

...
That was one of the issues I had when I bought the first wrecked bike, the wrecked ones at the auctions were going for a lot more than they were worth here.

I lucked out on all three that I bought, you can read about them here: Bob's ST1300s

I just purchased my 2007 with 25,000 miles $5,000 in November. Included new tires, brakes, and a top box. New is nice but new to me was good to my wallet.

Two years ago I lost my 2001 ST1100 in a fire and with the insurance money and $500 I got a 2003 ST1300 for $5200 Canadian dollars. It had 87,000km on it (about 54,000 miles). Heated grips, risers, Givi E52 top box, brake modulator, turn signal LEDs in the mirror covers and the cutest blue running lights in the front were already installed. It also had a perforated leather seat cover for the pillion which prevents the passenger sliding into you under moderately severe braking. Highly recommend this option if you carry a pillion rider. I paid 13% sales tax in Ontario. Having seen your taxes I am glad it was just that.

Still love this bike. It has never let me down.

I guess if I was in China I would have to take it off the road as it is more than 13 years old. Truthfully, it is just broken in. If it wasn't snowing I would take it anywhere tomorrow.

I kept it when I bought the Victory.

Here in the tiny island state in south east asia where I'm located, a "new" ST13 will cost you ~USD$32,000.
This is inclusive of a paperwork that states you can own and operate the bike for up to 10yrs only, thereupon you'll have to cough out another amount depending on market rate/fluctuations.
Currently the cost to own a new bike(entitlement paperwork) is ~USD$6,000 for 10yrs, be it a 125cc moped or GL1800!

Bought my ST1100 back in 2000 for ~USD$18,300, and I can only use it for 10yrs.
The above figure does not include insurance or other taxes...

I think all you folks should count yourself very very lucky! :)

So I am guessing that China and Singapore have implemented such enormous taxes and fees in part, at least, to discourage a buildup of vehicles? By making them prohibitively expensive, and by limiting their service life, they think to slow the rate of growth of personal vehicle ownership, which (theoretically) reduces congestion (not that there isn't any, but maybe it would be worse?), slows the need to create expensive new infrastructure, and (slightly) reduces vehicle-related air pollution?

Or, in the case of China at least, is it a protectionist measure? The non-Chinese products will be priced out of reach of the vast majority of would-be owners, where Kailun and other domestic brands can be had for much more modest prices? I don't expect Singapore has much of a vehicle manufacturing base in their economy, do they?

Or, is it purely a money-grab on the part of the government?

‘Or, is it purely a money-grab on the part of the government?’

^^ This, exactly...there’s no logical reason to take a well running and fuel efficient vehicle of any kind off the road (unless you pay a huge tax/penalty to continue to own what you like and can afford). It is likely a money grab by the government. It reminds me of ‘cash for clunker’s here in the US several years ago. Take well running cars in some cases (maybe not all), give a paltry sum for them ($4500) crush them and then enslave the driver by placing them back in debt on a new, much more expensive car with a loan attached. Pretty shady business if you ask me (and it was really done to pump up the auto market in 2008 when the markets receded). The cars I use now are 14 and 25 years old and they run fine...I have no intention to get rid of them (2004 Toyota MR2 Spyder and 1993 Nissan 300ZX convertible).

Yes protectionist, lot's of motorcycle manufacture in china. import bike if not made in 'Association of Southeast Asian Nations' should pay import tax.
in a short time, the bike made in 'Association of Southeast Asian Nations' may need pay import tax too.
more than 800cc : 30%
less than 800cc: 40%

I bought my 2007 ST1300 in Oct. 2015 for $7295 CDN + 13% tax. It came with 42,000 km and had some farkles (GIVI top box, grip heaters) and has been a great bike except for the clutch slave cylinder extravaganza. Otherwise, I love it and have no plans to sell it.
