Is there a place to go to find the number of ST bikes sold in the United States for each year? In other words, how many 2005 ST1300 bikes were sold in the United States? Also, how many 2005 ST1300 bikes are still registered in the United States? Finally, how many 2005 ST1300 bikes are owned by members of the ST-owners?

Honda does not release that information on any of their models. I doubt if the goverment keeps track by model. I don't think the forum keeps track by year, only by number of members who may or may not have an any year ST model.

maybe we could start a thread looking for the highest/lowest serial number owned by a forum member for each year

Honda keeps info like that close.

All we have is sales in the model years that reported or related to NHTSA recalls. Mark's STwiki site had that info at one time IIRC about 2400 in 04 and 2200 in 05.

Go over to my-mc-phoenix.com and search for posts by a Dave Wooster. He is an obsessed analytical engineer it seems and has done massive studies on ST models around the world, although he owns 1100's, so he may not have delved into the 1300.

The 1100 sold about 750 a year in the final years and probably less in the early years. Don't know about the 1300 model. Maybe more including the police bikes.

On the CB 1100 forum we have a registry using only the last 4 digits. We know by highest serial number registered for a given year, approx how many were brought into the US and sold, but it is not definitive. I had contacted Honda and was told Honda would not release those numbers to anyone, including media.they would also not release their sales expectation numbers. People were saying the CB 1100 was a poor seller, and I was trying to find out if it really was, but Honda is extremely tight lipped about such matters.

Especially media. This is pretty common with a lot of companies. Apple in particular draws flak for only talking about sales in very general terms leaving media to 'rely' on analysts' estimates and projections. Companies view releasing this information as giving an edge to the competition.

Interesting! Many of my friends have muscle cars. They can get a 'Marti Report' telling tons of info. Like how many models make, configurations, paint codes....massive info. I can see a Mfg. NOT wanting to give out such info. but.....just wild that car Mfg.'s will even break down that you own 1 of 112 automobiles w/those features and accessories. Like Ford will tell you in 1967 it sold 147,236 Mustangs. Down to the EXACT number. Mmmmm....dunno. Odd!

yeah, I generally hear these kinds of statistics regarding collectible cars from the '60s/'70s era. Maybe the auto industry was more open back then with sharing their data, or maybe they just sit on it until its no longer strategically valuable and then release it all to anyone that wants it. I'm not quite seeing the strategic value of Honda keeping it a secret whether they made 800, 1200, or 1500 ST1100s in any given year, but that's their business not mine. May also be a cultural difference between the US and Japan as well.

Manufacturers don't reveal production data as they don't want competition to understand their market share, sales trends, market segmentation, or the like. The manufacturer's don't reveal anything that may be used in some other entity seeing competitive opportunity or in deducing the manufacturer's strategy. That is common. It is unusual than any manufacturer in any industry releases any production or sales/volume data.

A manufacturer may later release data once the product is no longer sold to serve some other purpose, or out of some other interest such as releasing muscle car data to hobbyists in attempting to reinforce brand loyalty or their manufacturing 'prowess' (corporate testosterone!).

Or, a company may expose data to comply with Legal orders (such as is the case with NHTSA recalls).

As far as I know only BMW releases unit sales by model.

yeah, recall info is about the best you can do..
2005 didn't have any but 2003-2004 did
https://www.st-owners.com/forums/content.php?258-ST1300-Brake-Proportioning-Control-Valve-(Bike-Years-2003-2004)

looks like just over 2000 sold each year including ABS and non-ABS models - I'm assuming police models are included in that category.. and, this is probably just for the US.

I would think sales are similar for 2005 or slightly lower but these were prime years for the ST1300 so I think 2003 through maybe 2007 might have the best sales numbers.

There's an interestings site for UK vehicles - howmanyleft - which supposedly shows the number of vehicles of different types that are registered. We have to renew registration each year, or declare the vehicle to be off road.

Put in ST1300 and you will see a breakdown of the numbers each year for the different models. Some don't have the type or year recorded, so an ST1300A9 might be just recorded as ST1300.

Of course, once registered, most bikes will continue to appear in the figures for subsequent years.

But it is interesting. You can drill down into each year or each variation too.

I'm sure someone posted, in another thread, approximate numbers of ST1300's sold/registered/imported by year. This is my only source of info for this bike and I remember looking at my serial number and wondering how many other ST's were manufactured before and after my bike in that model year.

edit: I found this on STwiki. This must be what I remembered. I certainly do not know where these came from.

Even considering there is no data for 2005, 2006, 2007 those are really low production numbers (especially if worldwide). No way they ever recouped development costs or made a profit on the line and why Honda has stayed out of the development of an updated model line.

These are only US numbers as related to NHSTA recalls.

The ST1300 was sold in the UK and EC markets much longer than North America plus the home market of Japan.
