50K too many miles for '99 st1100?

Gosh I hope not.
I think we've got a bunch of people who would say that its just getting broken in.
I regularly talk with a neighbor whose 1100 has 130K+ miles. He is beginning to complain that the undercoating is beginning to show through the paint in a few places from too much "spirited" polishing. (won't happen on my bike -- the 1300's undercoating is the same color as the top coat).

Hell, that thing sounds like it's barely broken in! I sold a '93 a couple of years ago with 160,000 miles on it and it's still running fine. There are lots of STs around with over 200K on them. If it has been properly maintained there should be no concern at all about the mileage.
From what I hear, it's probably just now getting broke in. I don't think it unusual at all for them to go well over 100K. The main thing is to try and get a feel on how well it has been taken care from a maintenance standpoint.

Where I have mine serviced the mechanic has a customer with 200,000 miles on his ST....if it was well maintained 50K is not a lot.

Well, I wouldn't buy a 50,000mi ST1100. Mine only had 48,150 when I got it about 14 months ago...now has 73,000. I'm going to have to change spark plugs one day soon...
Well, it does use oil. About 4 oz in 8,000mi. Particularly if I spend too much time in the three digit speeds.

I bought my '96 ST1100 last November with 112k on it and it runs like a sowing machine.
Well, only faster, I've never seen our sowing machine move an inch from its place on its on power...
When I asked about its "high" mileage on this forum before I bought it, I got similar responses, some people telling about ST1100's with 250k on them that get the snot ridden out of.
Now from my own experience I can tell you that at 50k, your (future) bike still has a LOT of life left in it. If properly maintained, it is barely in its puberty.

Not even close. I have 65k miles on my 2004 ST1300.
If properly maintained, ST1100's have been known to turn over 200k miles with little or no work done other than routine mainenance. Hopefully the ST1300 proves to be just as durable.

I bought my second one (as a TOTAL!) with <30,000 miles. She now has nearly 78,000 and will turn 81,000 before I get home from my current trip. My first one is sitting at home with double that mileage and will get another 10,000 in August.

My Brother in Law bought a 95 4 years ago with 120,000 on it when he got it!!!! He rides all over the place and takes lots of trips on it. Good luck. And definitly get it!!!!!!!

BTW, I do routine 200-300 milers, too. Then I eat lunch and come home
500 miles is a bench mark of sorts for me and my buddy...It can be a good ride under 500, but a great ride takes more miles

One piece of advice about mileage though. When I bought my first ST with 15K on it, I extrapolated how long it would last me based on the annual mileage that I had been accumulating on my Interceptor. That turned out to be an inaccurate prediction. The ST, in either 1100 or 1300 configuration, is such an efficient asphalt consumption and disposal device that my annual mileage immediately more than doubled!
Contrary to many of these responses I actually have just discovered an issue with my ST1100... looks like cracked the speedo cable connector... now I don't know how fast I'm going... and that is a real problem!

Not necessarly! I had in Dec.of 05 get an offer to by a 97 with 12,200 miles on her and gave the bike broker 2 old non running Kawa's. I gave the fella $4,500.....tis just 3 very small area's of paint loss and the left bag has some cosmetic damage on the rear corner. Other than his dealer not running the correct antifreeze in it :roll: I found the bike in really good running order. Good luck and rider' safe....

Sounds pretty good to me. Bought my nearly perfect 98 last year with 28,000 on it for $5600.00 and felt like I got great deal.
I bought my '96 in '99 with 18k miles on it. I have since put 122k miles on it in the 7 or so years I've owned it. It's about time for spark plugs again, brakes, and tires too. If you like the black color and feel comfortable about the condition, go for it! First time you get a chance check the splines for grease.
