It takes some time to deliver my bike to Moscow, and I'm just getting crasy a bit. Tonight I've got the IDEA =) What about conversion my non-abs brakes to ABS one? I've look to manual, and - what's it? It's look like I need not too much parts for this. New ABS unit, two modulators (front and rear), tho rings on wheels with sender units and a not-too-difficult-to-make wire harness + small remake of brake lines. Is anybody here tries to do this or can make some advice about it? It should be nice FARKLE :) What do you think about it?

It's been discussed before, and the answer has usually been a resounding "technically possible but not worth it."

The question you'd have to ask yourself is whether or not you'd trust a home-installed ABS system to function properly. The cost and effort would be pretty substantial, too. The computer and modulators alone would cost close to US$2,000, and it might be difficult to find all of the connectors you'd need to build the harness in small quantities.

If the ST1300 ABS is very similiar to the ST1100 ABS (I have a ST1100 Standard and ST1100 ABS), the chances of replicating all of the plumbing, the electronics, and the other bits and pieces would be pretty slim. Having had the skins off both bikes, the additional amount of stuff that goes with the ABS is pretty amazing, not to mention subtle differences in the wiring harnesses. If you had a ST1300 ABS beside you when you started, your chances might go up a bit.

Here is how you do it.

1. Take photos of non-ABS bike.
2. Post description and price you would like for non-ABS bike.
3. Sell non-ABS bike to person who wants a non-ABS bike.
4. Take money from sale
5. Find ABS bike for sale
6. Buy ABS bike

DONE!

This process will take less time, money and grief.

Good Luck!

Yeah... I'm with Rob on this one.. if ABS is that high on the priority list then that's what you should have gotten.

ok, I've got idea  but I'm still looking for crushed bikes (it's a good foundry of used parts) in my area... maybe sometimes... I'm definitely sure, that I would't buy bike with ABS instead NONABS - I'm pretty sure that in Russia this conversion would be really expensive. But someday, maybe... After all, it was only farkle idea =) And ABS is not such high in my list, it's just another protection thing. And, on the other side, in Russia ABS on bike can be dangerous. It's mainly bad roads overall, so I suppose that on these roads my braking path with ABS could be dangerously longer than usual braking... I hope that I train myself a bit for these years, for grabbing the levers easily with progression...

BTW, I've found used ST1300 abs modulators in local parts store (in very good condition!). I'd buy it soon. I want to ask some electric questions. It seems, that I need to make some electric harness for sensors and so on, and wire it to ABS control unit. I'm sure, that I can do the needed connector, but I need to know, what color of wire should came to each pin in connector. If it possible to you, could you look in your ABS
unit, and make shematic description like this (i do not know real number of pins or real colors of wires, so it's just an example)
up

b - blue

thank you. I just want to do this farkle one day =) it will be interesting mechanical and electrical task.

Nobody can help with it? I've got the ABS-modulators, so it seems that I need only ABS control unit and speed sensors to begin my conversion. I really need this info for making it, cause I dont want to set experiments like 'maybe "plus" should connect here?' on 700$ unit... So I ask you for help. Even photos of connectors will be appreciated (if I can see what color comes to each pin). Sorry for disturbance, but there no one known to me ABS ST13 rider in Moscow. Thank you again.

Sorry, can't help, as my bike is 5,000mi away right now. Some high-res photos of the ABS boxes would probably sort you out. (But off-hand, I don't even know where those boxes are located...)

In order to do this properly, you should have the FULL set of ABS and regular braking components from the donor bike--the regular (i.e., Combined/Linked) braking components may be different on the ABS models, not just the ABS stuff.

(The front wheel is also different, to allow the mounting of the ABS ring, you know?)

I'd have to side with the rest, though, about the advisability of trying this kind of a swap. OTOH, you've got a very long winter to work on it! Good luck.

hi Nomad,
I have a 2002 st1300. (Non abs) , I have started to convert mine to a abs model. From first observations ,it should just be a simple changeout of parts .

To to buy brand new , we looking at approx. Between ?2000 to ?3000 to do.

i am going to attemp this , the second hand route.( my theoretical budget of ?750)

the parts I think we need to do a complete :

front modulator. (?30)
rear. Modulator. (?70est)
front sensor (?20est)
rear sensor (?20est)
abs ecu. (?100est)
complete harness changeout (?100est)
extra brake lines (30)
rear pulsat ring. (?18)
front pulsar ring. (? 50 from USA)

I have bought some of above already on eBay and quoted the price I have paid so far in brackets. I have been looking at costs for the other bits and quoted the prices I have found so far in brackets with est next to them.

from the above the cost so far should be in the region of ?400 to ?500.

P.S. If anyone has any of the above outstanding parts for sale. Please let me know.....

I will update , when I get more parts, and fit them all at the end with an outcome on wether it's that's simple or not.

how you getting on ?

regards

tony
