    Motorcycle tires shelf life?

Anyone know? When my latest order arrives I'll have 5 sets of tires for the ST stored in the shed.I've never had any age related failures from my tires that I've had stored but after searching online I can't seem to find a number on any of the sites dealing with this issue. The tires I have will last me around 2-3 years.

I've been told that as long as the tires are stored inside, they should last a very long time.

The main enemy to rubber is sunlight - and friction of course! (5 sets of tires in even 3 years is a real "friction indicator.") :o)

I look forward to hearing others' comments.

    Regards,

I've read, 2 years is the maximum age of a tire for sport or sport touring. A fews years longer on cruiser tires.

Tires contain VOC's that evaporate out of the tire over time, even while sitting in a warehouse. The VOC's keep the tire pliable and sticky so as they evaporate, the tire becomes harder, more brittle, and performes at less than manufacturer specs.

Maybe one of the more expert tire people can chime in and give us more insight.

Dunlop told me not to mount a tire that is more than 5 years old. That is assuming proper storage and handling.

OK, I'm curious as to why you have the tire collection in your shed. Most of us anticipate when our ST's will be needing some new skins, and then order a pair prior to the expected "change" date. Or do you have multiple ST's?

Another thing that can hasten early tire (rubber) failure is ozone, which can be a by-product of electrical sparking. So I'd try to keep the new tires away from compressors, refrigerators, etc. (any device having an electric motor starting/stopping frequently).

I was working in a shop that sold tires one's, and most of the big name tire maker's agreed. Don't use a rubber after 4yrs of manufacture date code.

((((OK, I'm curious as to why you have the tire collection in your shed.)))) Hey BridgeMan,I buy tires when I see a good deal and so I sometimes get ahead of demand.Same thing with filters, oil, etc.Consider the price of oil.I can only see oil going higher from now on.Tire prices are closely coupled to oil prices so tires will be much higher in the future as will everything else,so I might as well stock up.
