When I did my first oil change I bought the filters and filter wrench way in advance. And sure enough the filter wrench broke when I tried to use it and had to visit 3 auto shops to find a replacement that would work.
I only hand tighten the new filter, that way I can remove it by hand. No special wrenches needed. Give me a wrench and I'm sure to break something!:wt1:

I am about 3 weeks out from doing my first vavle check. Is there anyone local who has a shim kit? Also, what other parts will I need?

realistically, you may not need any shims at all. If they're all in spec, which is common, you won't need any. If one or two are out of adjustment, you can sometimes swap them around from one valve to another. If that's not possible and you just need one or two, they're usually about $5 or so from any dealer (doesn't have to be Honda), but I haven't priced them for a while so I'm not sure what the current costs are. Regarding other parts, sometimes the valve cover gaskets will re-seal, sometimes you need new ones. they're not cheap, so I usually try to get the old one to seal first.

I am hoping that none need changing. Just want to be prepared. Thanks for the heads up on the gaskets.
