I added a Battery Bug (BB) monitor on 1/1/13, and because it had no recorded history to think otherwise, it displayed 100% life remaining as soon as it was connected. The BB readings since then have been as follows:
57% & 13.0v on 1/2/13 after initial engine start
50% & 12.8v on 1/5/13 after several starts on a 45° day
49% & 12.6v on 1/15/13
46% & 12.9v on 1/21/13 after several starts during a 50° 160-mile ride to Richmond, VA
43% & 13.0v on 2/3/13
28% & 13.1v on 2/4/13 after starting when the bike sat out in 32° to 45° temps at work
28% & 12.7 on 2/6/13 after starting when leaving work today, 50° high temp
The 28% value had me a little concerned, and I was curious to see if I could reset the BB. So I left it disconnected from the battery on 2/26/13 for ten minutes, and when reconnected, the display said 0% (ZERO!) life remaining with 12.4 volts, beeped for 30 seconds, and displayed an "X" in its battery symbol. But the bike continued to start fine and the dreaded clock/odometer-reset ?signal? had not surfaced.
As of 3/11/13 the Battery Bug was still telling me "zero life remaining" and beeped for 30 seconds every time I turned off the engine. I hadn't used the Battery Tender, and the bike kept starting without the clock/tripometer-reset.
I wasn't too sure what to think of the Battery Bug, especially since the battery degradation appeared to commence as soon as the BB was installed. In hindsight, the BB gave me plenty of warning because the dreaded clock/tripometer-reset happened this past Wednesday, 3/13/13 when I was starting my bike at work for the commute home. It's replacement time!
I bought another Odyssey PC545 and installed it today. The first one gave me 26K miles of service over the course of 41 months. In one of my posts above I said I'd be happy if the Odyssey lasted three years. Well, I am happy ... I'm not ecstatic ... but I am satisfied with that amount of service life. The BB displayed 100% after hooking it up to the new battery, and displayed 74% life remaining after the first engine start & complete warm-up. "The countdown has restarted."
