Any Kalifornians here that have purchased a motorcycle out of state and registered in California? DMV folks (whose depth of knowledge is questionable) tell me there has to be a 2008 CARB compliant sticker on the bike for it to be registered. :banghead: I've gone to 3 different DMV branches and have received 3 different answers. Ah, beauocracy as its best! :banghead:I don't remember seeing one on my 06. Anyone tell me if they had any problems with the registration and where the CARB (Ca. Air Resources Board) sticker may be found? Thanks.

AFAIK, and I've researched this a few times when I was looking at out-of-State bikes, you just need to show that the bike is 50-State certified. Whether they take the time to come out and see the plaque on your bike, or if a photo is enough, is tough to say.

The reg should just go through, but we are talking about DMV. :shrug2:

This might help: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/fast_facts/ffvr29.htm

It was my understanding when I bought my 2005 that all ST1300's met California's CARB 2008 Emissions standards. I think the sticker is under the Seat. It should show in the factory repair manual or parts Fiche.

Sometimes they're myopic, and are focused on the fact that a sticker does/doesn't exist. You can get said sticker from Honda. It doesn't matter that the bike/model is 50-state certified, and it's already in their computers - they just want the sticker because its not there.

Smog inspection is same way. I had a truck get tagged as tampered because there was no "sticker" for the CARB approved Borla header installation. Borla sent me another sticker. PMO.

So make them be specific about the problem.

Yep, just when I thought I had a handle on it, someone at DMV throws another angle into the mix. But........I believe I have a clear, defendable position now whether it be a salvage or non-salvage bike. Anyone who deals with DMV knows a lot depends just on who you get at the counter. I have been fortunate so far in such actual dealings. One of the potential sellers checked under the seat of his bike and the emission label is under the passenger seat and he read it to me. He's sending me a pic of it too. Seems like I am good to go. To me, this is one of the great values of the forum. Need info quickly? Sift through the experiences and opinions of the members, weed out the non-applicables, do some follow up research, and a person can make some pretty informed decisions. Thanks again all. You too Rob for the color commentary. Spices things up a bit. ;)

Now, back to the word association thread. Insane. This should be one of the largest threads if it ever dies out.

My experience in bringing a bike (05 ST1300) form Arizona to Ca was a bit trying. The requirements about the minimum miles on the bike can be one issue. The problem I had was not with the CARB cert (they did not even ask) but in finding the vin # on the engine! The first DMV lady could not find it and refused to register the bike. She went and got another lady and she could not find it either. They gave up and sent me to the CHP.
I had to set up an appointment with the CHP office and have their ?specialists? find and verify the vin number. Well, that guy had NO clues where to even look and was no help. Told me to take all the plastic off and then he would look at AFTER I made another appointment. Well, I went over to the Honda dealer and the shop guy came out and showed it to me. I went right back to the CHP and asked to see the officer as I knew he was still on and I had time left in my appointment with him??. I showed it to him he cleared it and made DMV happy. It was a bit un nerving but it turned out fine in the end.

DMV is a joke by any means! Back in 99 I brought a 1985 V45 Sabre down from Canada. (750ccs not 700ccs!:hat1:)

Anyway, it didn't have some dumb sticker on it and I couldn't get it across the border into Montana, so I had the guy I bought it from (cost me a hotel night for him and his wife and a second trip to Montana) ride it across the border, and I picked it up a couple miles south. I loaded it in my pickup and brought it down to SanDyeggo.

DMV couldn't find the sticker either (since there wasn't one!:doh1:) , so they sent my paperwork up to Sacramento. After about 30 days I got a letter stating the proper way to enter a "motor vehicle" into the State of California" which was about what the Feds wanted too. I thought I was screwed. So I finally called the number in Sacramento, on the letter, asked for the guy that was on the letter, only to be told he was no longer there and that they would ship my title and registration down to me right away! :woo

I bought my 06 in Kentucky, no problems getting it registered. The CARB sticker is under the seat. The VIN number is on the fork tube head and the engine number is on the right front corner of the block directly below the lower right front corner of the head..
Since this is a used bike you can take it to Auto Club if you are a member, or go to the DMV. If this was a brand new bike only the CHP and or the DMV can verify the numbers.
The CARB statement is above the tire pressure sticker, one of the last lines of print.
A bike with less than 7500 miles is registered as a new bike, with more that 7500 miles it is registered as a used bike. The mileage will make no difference in the fees you will pay.

Another thought; whenever smog techs find a discrepancy (real or imagined), their first immediate thought is that you're a DMV inspector. Therefore, they go schizo if you try to reason with them. The harder you try to persuade them, the more convinced they are that you're a threat to them.

Only if it's NOT CARB certified. No mileage requirement if it's a 50 state vehicle.

Ask DMulk about his new Yamaha. :D
