I know it is a stupid question. The real answer is to simply at least do the check. But it seems like a lot of info suggests they dont usually need any adjustment? How many of you have never checked or adjusted you valves?

Thanks
Randy

On this site I bet not many have never had a valve check. But if the question was asked on a Gold Wing site I know there would be a lot more.
One of my GL buddies had his first at 98,000 miles. All were in spec.

Byron and I did mine around 48,000 and a couple were just barely out of spec so we changed them out. I figure at 100K (I'm at 78K now) I'll check them again...:

Always checked but so far all in spec (to 65,000 miles). I'll check them again around 85,000 miles.

Enough ST1300's have needed adjustment to make me check them about every 20,000. It's easy and I feel good knowing what's in there.

The Goldwing has a different valve actuation system and has 32K checks IIRC.

me neither at 84,000+. If I feel guilty enough : I'll do it at 100,000 along with other stuff.

Checked? Absolutely. Adjusted? Not yet.

The thing is that you can't decide not to check based on the fact that only a few ever have to adjust. You could end up one of the few that does and find out about it after an out-of-spec valve has started to cause damage.

I tell people that the first two checks are the most important, because they at least give you some idea where the valves are and which way they're wandering. After a third check, it's a lot safer to decide you're going to stretch the interval out a little.

I checked mine at 16,000 and one exhaust valve was out of spec - too tight. Glad I checked and changed out that shim to avoid a valve problem.

Checked both bikes at 16000. Both in spec. I think to maintain warranty and extended warranty this needs to be done and recorded. Like you I doubt there will likely be a problem but just not that hard to do. Changing the shims on the other hand would be a little work.

The crazy thing is giving the STealership $600 bucks to do the inspection! I've been reluctant to do that so I do the inspections myself, no adjustments yet. ;)

Just take a little cross country down here and we will show you how or come to Moonshine and sign up for the video and they may use your bike as a demo........:)

Well I plan on being at Moonshine. If they need my bike they are more than welcome to use it. I hope to at least get to watch the inspection or see the video later. That will surely help. ;)
