Hot Grips Variable Heat Controller Fried

I have Hot Grips which have worked great for several years.
Yesterday I was changing some wiring due a severed wire.

I got myself confused and made the mistake of using a multimeter to figure out the correct connections. Apparently, I ruined the VHC by trying to measure continuity. I learned this later while reading the installation instructions which say not to do that as the low current in the multimeter can fry the VHC.

Anyone done this and found a solution other than $85 for a new VHC?

I use a Heat Troller on mine. works great. About $50 to $60 http://www.dual-star.com/index2/Ride...d_grip_kit.htm. Which model Hot Grips did you use - 525-875 http://www.hotgrips.com/store.php?rn...on=show_detail or the 401 http://www.hotgrips.com/store.php?rn...on=show_detail ?

IIRC George found a generic PWM controller for about $20 that should handle 3amp.

I don't know if this is the exact one but you get the idea LINK

Someone else posted another option, same as this but with a "remoted" rheostat. I have one of those setting in the box behind me. Gonna go on lipSTick.

This one is from Hong Kong, shipped air mail via E-Bay. Here's a link to the current "auction."

Haven't tried it yet so not an endorsement but about 1/3 the price of the HeaTroller.

first time asking a ?, be nice to me, controler for heated grips quit working, cked the grips are working, thinking about a heat-troller but can't figure the wiring, heat troller has a neg. and a pos., honda oem has 2 wires coming out of the Q-harness, but where it plugged into the controller there are 3 wires, where did the black and white wire come from? which 2 wires do i use for the heat-troller? Would love to use the heat-troller if i can. Thanks in advance

I recommend Warm And Safe controllers, also available under Powerlet and First Gear brands. I fiddled with both options of the Chinese motor controller. Neither lends itself well to our purpose. Spend the money, get the one that works. No other brands have the built in circuit protection (as youse guys have found. )

Mike (original Warm And Safe guy) is a certified curmudgeon, but he knows his STuff.

Never saw the Honda grips so I don't know wire colors but I'm pretty sure the honda grips connect in series so you only end up with two wires. Ball park you should get about 5 ohms resistance between the two grip wires that hook to the heattroller or other pwm device.

Hopefully someone with the honda controller and grips chimes in.
