With the bike on the center stand, is there any pivoting of the wheel if you grab the tire and try to move it laterally?

Re: Issue after replacing cush drive dampeners

Small update, I pulled the wheel off.. then, tried turning the drive gear in the final drive by hand and it has the same resistance, it won't move easily...

I believe what we have here, given the feeling, is a bad u-joint... amazing, right after I said not to yell fire in a theater after Shuey's .. LOL

Well carp. I hope you get as good of service as Shuey did on your warranty.

Re: Issue after replacing cush drive dampeners

This good news is IF this is a failing u-joint, we might have a way to determine if yours is close...

I'll post some videos soon as I think I captured the sound.

Re: Issue after replacing cush drive dampeners

Here's some video

You can see in a couple of the last wheel turns, the tire actually pulls back the other direction - a characteristic of a u-joint bound up and pulling back.

Even without the wheel on, the same symptoms are felt.

Guess I'm taking it to the dealer, hope they agree and don't tell me it has to fail first.

I hope Honda is not sourcing the U-joints from the same folks BMW used.;)

Re: Issue after replacing cush drive dampeners

Gee Joe, even with my bad hearing I can hear it, are you sure its not the kinolian pin or related bearing?
Not sure where that is... I'll check the manual.

There's no give or extra movement, everything feels tight just the movement of the gear has the resistance... if you visualize a ujoint that is out of whack, you'd get that odd type of feeling... it's not the wheel, of that I'm 100% certain.

Re: Issue after replacing cush drive dampeners

That is a strange coincidence it went bad when you replaced the rubber dampeners.

Can you post pics once you find out what the problem is?

I just went and checked mine and it is smooth with no resistance or kickback and no noise,,, Whew,, but it sounds like this may be a common problem with the ST's.

I can't say that is when the symptoms started, that's just the last thing I remember doing when I did replace the rear wheel.... one thing I do when I replace the rear wheel is spin it when I'm done... THAT is when I started seeing this and I've gone an additional 4k miles since...

I put the old dampeners back in so that wasn't the issue and with NO WHEEL it still had the same issue so it's not wheel related.

I'm thinking about tearing into it myself.. I kinda want to do it just for the experience.
