Re: 2009 Calendar Submissions

OK, it's been a few days and Mark has had a bit of time to recover from the onslaught...

Took these pictures this afternoon on Mt. Helix in San Diego County. It's between El Cajon and La Mesa. I was pretty happy with the way some of them turned out so I thought I'd post a few. The full sized shots can be downloaded from here.

I took all these pictures myself and they are all available for publishing on the calendar.

Re: 2009 Calendar Submissions

I have a few questions to the panel....

What resolution (pixel by pixel) is a minimum recommendation?

I ask because most of my images are standard horizontal framing, but I had intended to use 'Shop to crop them into more panoramic shapes (like those I've linked to elsewhere from Death Valley). If I maximize resolution, composition is at best a compromise. If I can get by with something other than max resolution, I believe I can produce a more pleasing result.

Max resolution yields photos sized about 2580x2000 (conforming to the 1.29:1 standard).

Could I get by with something about half that size? Say 1290x1000?

TIA,
Jon

Re: 2009 Calendar Submissions

I post 800x600 here and if Mark wants them for use, I can e-mail him full size photo's.

NightRDR,

I'm okay with downsizing for samples/viewing.

My concern is how big does the larger image supplied to Mark need to be?
I'm starting with images measuring 3008x2000. If I maximize image data when trimming to the 1.29:1 ratio, I get the 2580x2000 size I mention above. That is the maximum image data I can provide compliant with 1.29:1.

On the other hand, I'd rather have some freedom to recompose my images with PhotoShop, but I'd be losing some image data in the process. For instance, if I don't like 40% of the foreground and background vertically, I'm cropping away 40% of 2000 pixels, leaving only 1200 vertical pixels. That may yield a better frame composition, but would reduce the image size to 1548x1200.

Is 1548x1200 a workable image size for the calendar?
(I would still probably reduce even more for previewing purposes.)

TIA,
Jon

From the link that Mark started this thread with,

Leave about 5% of the width or height near the edges. Don't chop off the bottom of your wheels or place the bike at the very edge of the picture.

Shoot in the highest resolution your camera offers. The absolute minimum acceptable resolution for an image is 1024x768. Photos at that resolution will have to be incredibly sharp and be good
I believe this answers your question.

Thanks Dana,

Don't know how I missed that. As you can tell, I picked up on the 1.29:1, but missed that minimum size figure. Oddly, that size is 1.33:1.

I'll probably attempt to get decent composition at some resolution above that, but not at full size for the reasons I stated before.

Back to work I go....
