I'm new to the Suzuki line of motorcycles, and my oldest son just picked up a 2001 SV650S.

Nice looking bike, it is blue, bars are way to low for me. He picked up a Clymer manual for it for me, as I will be his mechanic.

Looking for any input on this V-twin. It doesn't have ABS or FI.

Gary.

The seller was asking $1,200 for it, we could not start it, dead battery. Several issues on top of not hearing it run, so he got it for $800. Got it home, dropped a used battery that fit in it, and it fired right up. Warmed up & sounded great, no carb issues noticeable. But was leaking oil like crazy out of the bottom edge of the clutch cover. I replaced that o-ring, and no more leaks. Now we will go through the coolant, brake pads & change all the fluids. Then replace some missing fasteners & bolts.

That’s a very nice bike (aside from the too-low bars and the too-high pegs - for me too) and the price he paid was fantastic!

I just bought a 2017 SV650ABS (no fairing and regular bars) and I love it. I looked at a huge number of models for a commuter/lightweight/general booting around bike and the SV was the winner hands down.

From what I have read, you don’t need to expect too many problems beyond those of any carbureted bike. Just keep the gas clean and fresh and the oil changed and you should be fine.

I was afraid he would end up with a big headache and a money pit for his first street bike. But so far we have $18 in a o-ring, $15 in 5 gallons of fresh gas with seafoam. Next is check/clean the air filter, and things like that.

Gary.

Edit .... He will definitely need a battery too.
