The calipers on the front are interesting. right is bolted to fork. Left has some sort of hydraulic mechanism - why the difference?

The ST1300 has linked brakes. When the front brake is applied when the bike is moving the left caliper pivots on the lower bolt and the action of moving slightly forward toward the fork compresses a secondary master cylinder on top of the bracket. The SMC sends fluid pressure to the the rear caliper, thus linking the rear brake to the front brake lever. Soon you will know more than you ever wanted to about ST1300 brakes.

Great description by dduelin of how the system works. To check the rear link system, you raise the rear tire off the ground, push up on the left front caliper so the plunger depresses while trying to spin the rear tire. If the tire doesn't turn, the system is working properly.

Right..... The linked brakes are awesome when they work , but I'm not a fan of all the attention they crave!

Put the bike on it's center stand. (Dduelin has a great how to video on you tube) Then lay on the ground beside the bike and spin the rear tire with your leg. Then press up on the SMC caliper and the rear wheel should stop.
