Last week on a trip to California I got some help from the wind and hit 60+ mpg three times. 65.6 was the highest I got with my 02. That is the best mileage I have gotten on any of my ST's even though all my 11's and one 13 at have hit 60 at least once. Both of my BMW's beat 70 a couple of times so the ST's are not my all time best mileage bikes yet.

That's fantastic .

I was reading about one of the new bmw's today , I think it was the 1600gtl and their MPG rating was @ 50 MPH . I has to laugh at that .

 Very good Arnie... I've not managed that!

Over 179 fill-ups, my bike's mpg distribution is as shown below. The lower mpg tanks primarily being associated with trips at lower elevations and/or over-winter storage.

I have managed 50mpg once or twice on my 1300 it is not that easy for me. What other factors help besides tail winds and elevation changes and the obvious good driving habits ?

A couple keys are to use a not-oversized windshield, keep it at low positions, and minimize use of bags or topbox (minimize frontal area and drag). Also short shifting on acceleration.

What speeds do you run on the highways to get that kind of mileage ?

It seems like there is a huge difference between indicated 55-60 and indicated 65-70.

The bike was an 1100. I was running 65-70 much of the time as the speed limit was 65 on 160 in Colorado.

Congratulations.
You also got 60 on a 1300????
If I got 400 miles out of a tank I'd have to push it for the last hun'rt LOL.

Did you avg. 65.5 mpg for the whole tank or was that just a peak reading on the gauge? If that is 65.5 mpg for the whole tank, that's fantastic? My gauge has shown as high as 68 on down hills but the bike has never averaged over 48 mpg. that was when I first got it and was a little timid about cranking on the throttle while I was in the getting to know the bike stage. Now a good tank average is 45 mpg.

Didn't think of that LOL.
99.9 on the down side of the bridge on the commute here.

Steve is your trip meter optimistic compared to real mpg using math?

No just the opposite my computer will read 42.2 and when I do the math I am usually a bit higher than that. And I was thinking the same as above that maybe this was an instant reading rather than an average.

The 1100's don't have the computer. It wasn't a whole tank. It was only 197 miles. I don't go by the computer on the 1300's but my 03 did 60 mpg once according to the pump. I saw no reason for that as wind was no help and I was just riding roads around Wichita that the 03 usually gets close to 50 on.
