It was sunny and 65 in Atlanta after three weeks of bleh weather. Suddenly bikes were congregating in my driveway. So we made a tech day of it.
Thanks everybody that just showed up in my driveway. Now my neighbors think I have more bikes hidden in my garage than they thought.

Is that a chip missing in the fork tube?

No. That "chip" is a factory groove.
It's the fork seal that's visible.
You shouldn't see the spring.
It's supposed to be seated down in.
Then a metal C clip holds it in place.
And then a the dust cover goes over it all.


bottom is seal
middle is clip
top is dust cover.

Without the clip, there's nothing really preventing the lower part of the fork tube from coming apart from the top, except for the bike weight pushing down.

If both are like that and you say, popped a wheelie, the front tire and lower forks might just fall off.

The "chip" in question may be the reflection of the burr on the corner of the rock guard.

Good explanation, however, not right this time.
Those are after market fork seals, probably purchased at a dirt bike shop, and the upper part with the exposed spring is used in place of the Honda dust cover.
Some of these aftermarket seals use dust covers that are held tight against the fork tube with those springs etc.
I've run across several of those seals on escort bikes, where folks don't want to spend money on repairs etc.

While those do in-fact look like All Balls brand, not all wiper seals with an exposed spring are automatically worthy of derision.

SKF Fork seals use that design. Advertised to have very low stiction. They are OEM quality not a low-price cop out. Used from the factory on KTM's. Historically they were available in green, more recently also in black.
