Be warned that the FJRForum is a bit... Rough? Less Restrained? Spirited?
I love it over there but that crowd is not held to the same behavior that Mellow requires. They will dogpile you for dumb questions or questions that have been answered repeatedly before. A little time reading and researching will net huge dividends on that site.
Your son should be very happy with an FJR. I like those bikes. There are 3 generations: '03-05, '06-'12, and '13-'14. The most desirable is obviously the Gen3 with the most modernizing updates. A Gen2 can be had at a bargain rate right now because of the folks upgrading to the Gen3. If you go with a Gen2 the best years are '08 to '12. Those are almost a Gen2.5.
