Given a choice, which would you prefer BT020 or BT021?

Which has better performance?

Which has better mileage?

Which has better handling?

Which has better pricing?

Thank you,

Stay with the BT 20 STill Styling. The BT 21R's may be cheaper but they are not a good tire for the ST. I had a set on my bike and front and rear wore out at the same time. The short and simple is the BT 21 should rated for a lighter bike at best.
Appreciate and "thank you" for your advice and sharing your practical experience.

Definitely the BT020's. Also, the 021 isn't rated for the ST1300.

Yes the 021 is rated for the ST1300. It isn't the OEM original replacement tire but it is the right size and has the correct load and speed ratings stated on the DOT placard and in the owners and service manual. However the 021 does not seem to garner any praise whatsoever when fitted on the ST1300.

Call it what you want, the 021 holds up about the same as the BT020 U version on the ST1300. Neither of which are spec'd for the ST1300. Both of which are a very different construction compared to the BT020 F version.

There are several good choices for tires none of which are Honda's OEM and one and only "spec'd" tire now that the Dunlop 220 is NLA.

Some choices give a premium to grip and handling and some are biased to longer wear at the expense of road holding. Isn't choice great?

I'm going to throw my .02 in here... I've run through 3 sets of 021's... Personally, I like them.... Mostly because I have to ride 3 hours to find a crooked road... the center compound is harder and allows me to get more mileage out of the center... However, I always make sure that I have a 'spankin' pair on when I head to the BRG... it can be a little disconcerting after about 3/4 wear when the bike transitions from the center compound to the edge... Not really a big deal if you're aware... I tend to delay my entry to the turn and then do a 'snap' turn instead of the long, gradual arch (which some seem to like to ride the transition rubber)... But the best part: YMMV It's all about your 'style'...
P.S. I can only speak about 020 vs. 021, since they are the only two sets of tires that I've used on the 1300...

I'm sticking with 020s. What kind of life are you getting out of your 021s, Chip?

I had 021's on my ST in 2007, and the front wore out on the sides too quickly IMHO. The rear was OK.... if it's a choice of the two, I'd stick with 020's, and maybe try an 021 rear once to see if it works for you.

An additional .02. I was in Daytona this past week and talked to a Bridgestone rep. He indicated that the BT 21's were not designed for the ST and that he could only suggest BT20F's for the ST. They will release a new BT23 mid year that is designed for the heavier Sport Tourers and in sizes for ST. The BT21's on an ST 1300, the fronts wear out before the rears. "odd" I like the handling of the 21's, but only about 8500 miles on a front. ?????

BT020F all the way! I had an email conversation with Bridgestone because I'm having trouble getting the 20's in Canada but that's a whole other thread, so I tried a BT021 on the back. It didn't wear at all. Just over 6 thousand miles and I was right to the steel belts! I usually get 10 thou from a 20 and they feel a lot better in the corners too. The BT21 isn't rated for the ST1300. She's a heavy girl. JMNSHO. Marty

I am sticking with the OEM 020F primarily because of their stability in a flat tire situation

Also, take a look at how they are constructed:

OEM Battlax BT-020F 170/60ZR-17
(3) Rayon plies in the sidewall
(3) Rayon & (1) Aramid ply in the tread

Battlax BT-021 170/60ZR-17
(2) Nylon plies in the sidewall
(1) Steel, (1) Polyester, (2) Nylon plies in the tread

Note the additional sidewall ply in the 020F. Also, the 021 has a steel ply which may effect how well it will hold a plug if you do get a flat

I like the BT 023 at 1300 miles. It is comparable to the Avon Storm for grip and feedback and way better than the Michelin PR2 in feedback and straight line stability. A quiet tire too. Let's see how long they last on the ST.

I got less than 11,000km (6800 miles) from the BT021's front and back. Mostly riden in hot climate 28-36c (83-97F). Always 290/290kPa (42/42psi).

Front wore out the edges and left the centre with plenty of tread (dual compound). One short ride on on twisties did what I estimate to be 80% of the damage to the front. It was a 40C (104F) day but dash temperature was 42c on several occasions. I washed the bike on the weekend before this ride and noted "front is good but I'm up for a rear". On the hard braking downhill section of the above ride, I thought I was getting a flat front tyre so backed right off. It was very squirmy through the corners. I called in at the next service station, checked pressure as about 305kPA, which is normal when hot, and saw that there was no wear left on the outside of the front. It wasn't "belted" but there was no tread left in some parts. I suspect that heat is not this tyres friend. Heavy bike, hot day, hard braking into and through downhill corners may have been too much for it.

I did a hard braking test coming into my garage later. The tyre pattern left on the floor shows the front tyre does flatten out a lot. This, rather than my cornering prowess, probably had a lot to do with the wear. When flattened, the softer outer would be copping a hammering and has left the hard centre comparitivley good. A bit more pressure in the front might have been benificial.

The rear just wore progressively in the centre. Nothing unusual for the majority of the riding I do down the highway.

Back to the BT020F's for me.
