I think it's weird...
Honda NT700VA, P/N 15410-MCJ-003
Honda ST1100, P/N 15410-MCJ-505

thread size, flange, diameter, cartridge length all seem identical... even the price...

different media resistance?
different bypass relieve pressure?

On the dealer lists you'll find pattern filters like "... fits all Honda motorcycles ..."

The last three characters in a Honda part number reflects a minor revision in the part or a vendor change, neither of which affect the design characteristics of the original part.

In North America the current # is 15410-MFJ-D02 but dealers may still have D01s on the shelf.

The cross reference list is one man's opinion and lacks any documentation of test results that come to the conclusions of "best" and "superior". At least the creator was honest to say that in the original list but the revision left that off.

Of course, using the right oil and changing it often is more important IMO. My CH80 doesn't have a replaceable filter at all.

You may already have this, but it's pretty interesting -
Oil Filter Cross Reference (calsci.com)
FWIW, I've been using the Purolator PL14610 for years on all of my ST1100s.
Like 80% of those brands are unavail of over here...
EMGO, HighFlow, Champion, occasional K&N... (depending on which gag-contract dealers have...)
ST1100: Champion COF203
NT700: Champion COF104
ST1100: K&N KN-303
NT700: K&N KN-204-1

Ordered 15410-MCJ-003 for my GF's NT700VA, received an 15410-MCJ-020P EMGO pattern (probably as OEM were out of stock...)
uncertain if EMGO is that good to begin with...

And at the end of all OEM P/N cross-references it boils down to 15410-MCJ-505... ;)
I figured the NT700 might have different oil pressure of flow volume requiring a different filter... but it doesn't seem so... MCJ-505 it is...

I never checked the validity of this but years ago I was told by a couple of Honda motorcycle dealers that Honda only had two cartridge oil filters for motorcycles regardless of what the P/N was. The difference was the physical dimensions for the space available in different motorcycles. One was significantly larger in diameter than the other and I think that it was a little longer as well. They both had the same mounting flange profile and size, the same thread diameter, and the same O-ring dimensions in the same location. The only difference was that the larger one had more filtering media in it. On my motorcycles where the smaller one was specified I always put the larger one on if it would fit in the available space. When I would go in to the Honda dealer and ask for an oil filter they would never bother to look it up, they would just ask me if I wanted the small one or the big one.

Many years ago, that may have been true, but with all the new engines, and bikes being made in other countries now, that is no longer the case.

When I got my last oem Honda filter the only diffrence was the color. Old one was shiny black and new was more duller black almost matte color. I think part number must of changed many times since I bought my first filter 24 years ago.

I've used their air filters for years and you cannot tell them from the stockers.
EMGO seems to be a very reputable company AFAIK.
Me too. Have used Emgo air filtres on my VF500 and VFR since mid-’80s without any issues. VFR just ticked over 100k-miles this year! :)

Not so good results with K&N… similar to NYC’s cab fleet experiment…

Oil filter threads are like oil and battery and tire threads - they go on forever and are never resovled. Do a search (top right of this page, blue band) and entertain yourself. Make some popcorn first, have a beer or two nearby, and start reading.

What do you think I was doing for aprox 1 hour before this post... ;)

Still doesn't explain why pattern filters vary for the two vehicles, while Honda melted down to only one...

I don't look for the cheapest or select unknown brands but research my selection and choose well known and popular brands for filters, oil, etc. Once picked, I tend to stick with that particular brand and number (of filter) year after year, unless there is compelling reason to change (such as the K&N welded nut problem or a filter's cardboard element falling apart).

have yet to hear of engine failures or running problems from a failed air filter. :thumb: :beatdeadhorse:

Here's K&N filtre. I've seen many, many where there's absolute void and no filtre media at folds.

Back in early '90s, NYC tried to reduce costs of disposable paper filtres on their fleet of cabs by going to re-usable K&N. Turned out cost of increased frequency of engine-rebuild negated any savings. So they went back to disposable paper filtres.

Comparative ISO 5011 Efficacy Tests of Nine Automotive Engine Air Filters, Spicer, A (2008)

There's tonne of UOA reports from labs like Blackstone showing high dust counts getting through K&N with high wear-metal counts. Note higher than ave. silicon count and loss of oil-viscosity even with low miles using full-synthetic of recommended weight.

Sure, might not cause immediate engine-failure, but certainly shortens life-span. My Ninja 250 required engine-rebuild after 50k-miles with worn-out rings and bearings on K&N. CBR & VFR's had Emgo their entire lives since '80s and is still going strong at 100k-miles.

I found this in my shop the other day, so I checked to see if it is on the list for compatible filters for the ST1300 and it is. I wasn’t going to post it because I didn’t want to end up in a useless discussion about using it on my bike or not. But as this is a post about this very subject, here it is. Now I just need to pick up a gallon of Rotella T6. I will not use a K&N on anything.

Fram's Ultra line has synthetic media. It's good for +99.5% efficiency for particle sizes 15-20 microns. Much, much better than their old paper filtres! :)

These types of criteria is why I stock up on Purolator, Mobil 1 and Bosch filtres for my Hondas.
