Not trying to tell anyone how to maintain their bike here. (more than one way to skin a cat) When I do my fork oil every 10,000 miles, I leave both forks connected to the lower fork stem and remove as a complete unit. I do not remove any plastic. I accomplish draining and servicing left and right fork at the same time without have to adjust anything when I reassemble. I also inspect and service the neck bearings at the same time (tapered roller bearings).

You guys are helping me a bunch as I will b.e tackling this job soon. I bought my 1300 last June with 45K on the clock. The owner couldn't give me any info on the service as he had the bike for two years and put 1500 miles on it. And I really don't think he did anything to it at all.
Thanks for the help and it sure would be nice to see some more photos.:)

I have 4 different torque wrenches, and all of them had plenty of room to fit on the lower pinch bolts without having to remove any tupperware or inner cowls.
The easiest one to use is a Snap-On 1/4 inch drive and a standard depth 12mm socket. Having the correct tools helps.
The photo by Justytroll is a common craftsman 3/8 inch drive wrench, and it even fit on the lower bolts with room to spare.

I've only ever done this on the 1100 - when I needed to replace the bushes and seals. And that involved making a 'tool' to compress the springs to remove the collets.

But the 1100 has a drain hole. I've never looked on the 1300 - but I guess that there isn't a drain hole ?
No drain hole. Replacing the fork oil requires turning the forks upside down.
