So today I saw a 1300 (police escort) that had the headers wrapped. Talked to the officer for about 5 minutes about the bike. He said he put 170,000 on his 1100 before they upgraded to the 1300s and he already has 80,000 on this bike.

He says that it really helps keep the heat off of him when they are doing a lot of slow riding.

Anyone here done it?
Sounds like something I may do while I am doing the valve cover gaskets.

Thoughts?

I just did it two months ago. It helped some, but not as much as I thought it would. I wrapped them until they came together. I think I am going to wrap them the rest of the way inside the fairing. I also did the reflectix treatment which helped. Now i need to deal with the heat coming out of the head area. Baker wings or honda fairing trim kit i guess?

A ceramic coating seems to work as well, and would be better for longevity. I have had mine coated for 8 years and have had no heat problems. There are different schools of thought on the subject. Even though the headers are stainless steel, I think it is better to protect the material with ceramics than subject it to the contained high heat that the wrapping produces.

I'd been thinking of doing the header wrap over the winter to try and reduce the heat that radiates off the motor on hot days but maybe I'll have to look into the ceramic coating. Did you do it yourself or take it somewhere to have it done? If you did it yourself what product did you use?

There are a couple of companies that can apply the ceramic coatings now. There are now coatings that have a look similar to chrome. Search the subject here, there are a few posts that can help. JetHot is the largest and has a few locations in the US. Mine were done in St Louis.
