The “new to me” bike is completely missing the heat shield under the carburetors. Is there a template anywhere so I can cut a new shield? Possible I can source a good used one. Has anyone already sorted a good way to make one vs. the current Honda price of a new one at around $ 80.00?

Cheese - that sounds good and may save Dan from having to dig around.

I used the heavy 'shower floor' pvc mat from Home Depot to make a replacement when I found mine to be worthless.

I gave the bike to the brother-in-law with 140,000 miles on it (shield was replaced at ~60,000 IIRC).
It was fine when I did the timing belt at 110,000 and hasn't been replaced ( believe he's put about 10,000 on it) yet.

My '91 SSMST came NEW from the factory
without one - NONE installed at all !
No heat shield !
It took at least 2-3 yrs. before I realized a
Heat Mat was supposed to be in there !
Didn't seem to matter at all.
Bike ALWAYS ran fine for 250K Miles.
So I never put one in!
Good Luck.
