Item (1) in the diagram is only for non LBS models, I was wondering why it was removed on the LBS model (like mine). The reason I ask is that I have a lot of impact damage in the same region of the stanchions (fork tube) that this would protect

I'd guess UV damage caused the things to get brittle and fall off at some point (or broke due manipulation during a fork rebuild in the past)

I think that was for the earlier models, the Later model front fender has Owl ears that stick up and protect the fork.
Aha, that makes sense

Wonder if its possible to use both ! If not then I'm defintely fitting boots once I get my pits repaired (or fork out for new stanchions)

I doubt it. The ABS has 43 mm dia. vs. 41(?) mm dia. forks for the Standard. That would lead me to think the sliders are also larger dia. I think they are a casting finish as opposed to a machined to size finish. I haven't looked closely at them for years. Might be able to machine them to Standard dia. size but I'm doubtful
