I've always heard liquid-cooled bikes require a silicate-free coolant ... and that automotive coolants are forbidden because they abrade the impeller seals. The maintenance manual for my ST1300 doesn't mention this ... so, does the ST use a different type of water pump that tolerates automotive antifreeze/water mix? That manual has a lot of mistakes in chapter six, so I don't really trust it. For instance, it only shows one block drain (right side) for coolant instead of two ... and it calls that a "cylinder drain" (page 6-6). I bought the expensive Honda motorcycle coolant to be on the safe side ... but could I have saved some money with an automotive coolant?
