I just bought a Ron Smith/ Roy Fletcher dash shelf. I want to mount my 2730 Garmin and my 8500 Escort. I am also thinking that when the 2730 dies I will replace it with a Zumo. I am not sure how I want to mount the GPS. I thought I would just mount it with a Ram ball with a short arm. I have looked at just about every post I could find, but I haven't seen anything I like. Does any one have any better suggestions? Maybe some pictures. Thanks.

There's a photo on post #4.

I attached a couple of the rectangular based RAM balls to the dash shelf, one for the Zumo and one for the radar detector. The power comes through a couple of the panel top mounted (http://www.powerletproducts.com/product/panel-top-powerlet-socket/284) Powerlets.

RAM makes a slightly longer arm that's spring loaded (to keep closed) on one end. It makes it a little easier to remove the entire Zumo mount when I need to lock it up.

Roger thanks for your response. What you have is pretty much what I was thinking with the GPS. I have purchased a Legal Speeding Case to put the radar detector in. I thought I would mount the case directly to the shelf. I do have a couple of questions for you:

With the GPS and radar detector on Ram balls, how stable is it. I am concerned that by putting the devises on arms it would be less stable, and they would bounce around. This is one of the main reasons I put up this post. I did see some guys made brackets to mount the GPS.

How do you listen to your Radar detector? External speaker or do you have it in the J&M?

I also see that you have a J&M. I have the same, and I also have MCL risers. The J&M hits the shelf when the bars are turned all the way to the right. Do you have the same issue?

The Zumo, being heavier, bounces a little bit on occasion (depending on speed, road, and the angle of the RAM arm,) but it's not been a problem. When it does move (infrequently) it's not enough to compromise viewing the screen, and the frequency is so low that I don't worry about vibrations hurting the electronics. (The Zumo is made for motorcycle use, after all.) The Escort doesn't seem to move hardly at all. Using the RAM arms places the GPS and radar detector higher up; which allows me to keep my eyes closer to the road (but they're not "in the way".) It also places the radar detector more in my peripheral vision, so I'm more likely to see the visual alerts (eventually, I may attach one of the Mark Pharnes LED units, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.) I'm not running the Escort through the Zumo, but I've considered it. At full volume, the audio alert is discernible behind the V-Stream windshield, but not very loud. I have the two-piece MCL risers. I had to trim some of the left edge off of the shelf - you can just barely see it in the photo - it's the shiny line that you see (I'm going to get around to painting it black one of these days...) I used a cut-off wheel in a hand grinder, because I already had the shelf mounted. I clamped a short piece of bar stock to the shelf to use as a guide and insure a straight cut. A hacksaw would probably work if the shelf was off the bike. I only lost a very small sliver of shelf space. The one-piece risers may require more, or less, material to be removed.
