Just got back from a 5-day, 1800 mile trip to PA, MD, VA, WV, NC, and TN. I started the trip at 98,296 and was going to finally see the bike top 100k. Wouldn't you know it that the speedo cable broke on the first day! NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! I've only been waiting for this moment since....let's see....ALMOST THE WHOLE TIME I'VE HAD THE BIKE!!! We stopped at a couple dealers along the way but they only confirmed what I expected, they didn't have a cable in stock.

Luckily I kept a close watch on my partner's bike mileage and know for a fact (within reason) I'm currently at 100,076 miles, but it reads 98,552. The new cable is on order. The OCD in me is in crisis. How do I fix the mileage listed on the odo? Being on the interstates for many miles, I was picturing hooking up my dremel to the end of the new cable where it attaches to the front hub and letting it run at 155mph for approximately 9.8 hours! LOL! (And then by a new dremel) The other solution is to see a psychiatrist to cure me of my OCD. Lol...

Any ideas?

BTW- I bought the bike almost 6 years ago with 30k miles, so I am NOT requesting a 100k mile award. That'll happen once the bike reaches 130k.

DO NOT hook up a new cable,,,,,once it shows over 100k..... it will be worthless!!!!!

Everybody knows bikes are high mileage when they turn more than 20k!!!!!

It's therapy I'm afraid.
And in the UK, and I kid you not, a well known motorcycle magazine make a big deal to see who can ride 5000 miles a year! Now if it was 50000 miles a year that would be a big deal, until your Speedo cable broke at 49999.

I think speedo cable breakage is fairly rare, have you checked the connection on both ends to make sure it didn't just come out of the connector at either end?

To add to this, also make sure to inspect the speedo drive box on the front wheel. There have been reports of the little gears in there failing too.

Hmmmm.... that could be a possibility as I just installed new bearings on the front wheel. Although it did work for 500 miles. Hmmmm...

I truly understand! My wife on the other hand thinks I'm nuts because I track miles like I do!

My 2010 was sold to me without a speedometer. So I added the cop speedometer I had and it had like around 37K miles on it, but the bike had only about 1,500 miles. So I never liked having a speedometer so far over. I even contacted one guy that works on speedometers and he refused to get it at the mileage I wanted!

After putting 18+K miles on the 2010, I found a used cop speedometer with only 409 miles. So when I hit 50K miles, that I put on the 2010, I had to add both the speedometers...the 18K (old) + the 32K (new).

And that other cop speedometer (old), it's sitting on my commuter bike with just over 100K, where I'm almost at 50K with that bike! :rofl1:

So, yeah, I understand the mileage thing about liking the mileage to be accurate, or at least as accurate as you can get...especially when you are about to hit BIG milestones! :D

The routing of the cable can make a difference to the amount of inner cable that is available at each end. It's a long time ago now, but I remember that after working on the front wheel, the speedo didn't work. Investigating, I pushed the inner up the cable until it would go no further and then turned it, and I felt it engage with whatever is at the speedo end. There wasn't enough exposed 'flat' end to engage at the bottom end. Re-routing the cable solved the problem. The previous owner had always had the cable emerging through one of the forward facing slot in the fairing. I routed it down the fork leg.

LOL, I feel your pain....

I lost speedo while on a trip a few years back - on my ST1300, with electronic speedo. But since I always zero out my Garmin before trips, I know that I have to add 1134.6miles to my indicated mileage. Annoying but at least I know. Turns out that the wires from the sensor got burned against the engine. I repaired them, when I got back, now working fine.

So how do I Dremel an electronic speedo to get it back to right? (just kidding)....

Take out the speedometer sensor and run a magnet across it...a million times?

Just guessing...:rofl1:

Yes, I was that sad git who tried to correct the lost mileage on my Speedo. Out on a ride I noticed that my Speedo had stopped working, fortunately my satnav told me how many miles I was from home so no problem, 250 miles short on the clock. Never mind, set to with hand drill thinks I, two hours later and running the drill flat out, I had only added 100 miles. Needless to say, the remaining 150 won't be getting added and a shrink has been consulted.

Congrats on the milestone. You know you did it, that's all that counts.
