If I ever get a radar detector, and considering every roadtrip I take has a rainy day in it, how weather resistant are radar detectors mounted on top of the instrument panel in a rain storm?

someone makes a box for the V-1 or the 8500 that is waterproof, I have mine mounted in the fairing pocket, don't have laser this way but where I normally ride they don't use it anyway, plugged into my headset so the beep goes there

Yea, I was about to ask why you would need a radar detector in the rain. ;)
With my Pilot Roads I can cruise at 85mph without a problem... RD is nice to have :)

Mine isn't for speeding for the most part just for those moments when coming into a small town and the leo is hiding behind a bush and your decelerating from the hwy speed limit to the 25mph speed limit, if your going 35 revenue for the city

Wet weather is one of the reasons I went with a two-piece unit. The antenna is waterproof but I have it mounted behind the plastic of the front fairing. The controls are in the fairing pocket out of the weather. Also out of site from theft.

No they are not water proof/ resistant. I wasted an older 8500. I now carry a few ziplocks that I stretch over the 8500 X50. It's not that I don't speed in the rain, I just like to know if there are LEO's around. (I have been known to run at some pretty good speed in the rain with my PR's).

I made a cheapo rain cover for my V1. I was going to get the leagalspeeding or whatever the box is that Cyclegadgets sells for the V1 but felt it was too big to go on the dash shelf - and it was $60. Then when I want to put the V1 back in my truck after riding the bike, I'd have to remove the box and remove the screws to get the V1 out, just too much hassle.

This was pretty easy to make with a sharpie, razor blade and heat gun. I did waste one in the process of making this one, but hey, they were only like $4 for 2 of them.

I left a long "skirt" on it to keep water from spraying up under the bottom of the unit and also to protect my garage door opener which lives on the underside of the dash shelf in that location. The V1 seems pretty well protected this way as it is mounted to the dash shelf with 3M Dual Lock which actually keeps the V1 about 1/8" up off the shelf so no pooling water gets to it - see the V1 remote audio adapter on the LH side of the dash shelf for a better view of this.

On the recent trip down to North GA I got rained on BAD from Clarkesville, GA all the way to Franklin. I did finally remove the audio adapter and put it in the tank bag but left the V1 on the shelf. This was it's first heavy reain test and it came out just fine.
